Vintage 2017
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico by Rubinelli Vajol
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2016 by Rubinelli Vajol is a masterful blend of 40% Corvina, 40% Corvinone, 10% Rondinella, 5% Molinara, and 5% Oseleta. Cultivated on limestone, tufa, and clay soils, half of the vines are trained in the traditional Pergola Veronese system, while the other half follows the Guyot method.
Carefully handpicked grapes are left to dry for months in a loft, concentrating their flavors before being pressed in mid-winter. A long fermentation process is followed by years of aging in large oak barrels, allowing the wine to evolve slowly before further refinement in the bottle.
With an alcohol content of 16% vol, the wine showcases a rich crimson hue with vivid ruby highlights. Its bouquet bursts with aromas of cherry, sour cherry, and ripe red fruits, blending with hints of orange rind, underbrush, and flowers. Complex layers of spices, tobacco, dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, and pepper emerge, offering an intricate aromatic experience.
On the palate, this Amarone is full-bodied and velvety, revealing fine tannins and a fresh finish. The balance between fruit and spice creates a persistent interplay of flavors, enhanced by the mineral undertones. The result is an inviting and long-lasting wine, harmoniously combining intensity and finesse.
Ideal pairings include slow-cooked dishes like roasted veal shank with herbs, and aged cheeses. Itโs a wine meant to be savored, whether alongside food or on its own as a contemplative experience. For optimal enjoyment, decant at least one hour before serving.

Rubinelli Vajol traces its roots to the early 1900s when founder Gaetano Rubinelli, after constructing the Chievo Dam on the Adige River, acquired land in the center of Valpolicella Classica. Over time, the family began to produce wine in a traditional country complex with stone-built cellars. Today, all grapes, Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, and Oseleta, come from a unified stretch of vineyards bordering Corte SantโAnna, forming the basis for five classic labels: Amarone, Ripasso, Valpolicella Classico Superiore, Valpolicella Classico, and Recioto.
Wine production respects the slow rhythm of maturation, starting with the vines that thrive on stony, lime-rich soils. Grapes destined for Amarone and Recioto are gently dried in on-site lofts, ensuring concentration of flavors. Fermentation proceeds in conditions that balance tradition and practicality: cool, stable temperatures in the cellars built against the hillside allow a gradual conversion of sugars and help preserve character. Long aging then takes place in large French and Slavonian oak barrels (30 or 50 hectoliters), which maintain the distinct aromas of each variety without dominating them.
Every bottle is numbered, reflecting close attention in both vineyard and cellar. Emphasis is placed on methods handed down through generations, yet improved by thoughtful innovation, resulting in wines that capture the Valpolicella character in every glass.
