Vintage 2020
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Costasera – Horse Lunar Year” 2020 by Masi
A special release marking the arrival of the Year of the Horse in 2026. The label is dedicated to the qualities traditionally linked to the horse in the Chinese lunar calendar—courage, vitality, independence and a warm, social spirit—traits that resonate naturally with Amarone itself. This 2020 vintage combines Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, giving a deep ruby colour and a profile rich in baked fruit, plum, cherry and gentle sweet spice. On the palate it is full and smooth, with ripe fruit, soft tannins and a finish that lingers with remarkable length. It suits relaxed after-dinner moments and pairs beautifully with red meat, game, quail and dishes with strong flavours, as well as aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino and Gorgonzola. Serve at 18–20 °C. With 15% alcohol and a long life ahead—30 to 35 years—this edition is also part of a broader series by Masi, of 12 collectible bottles inspired by the Chinese zodiac, each presented with its own dedicated artwork and individual case, making it an appealing option for collectors and long-term cellaring.

Masi Winery has its roots in the Valpolicella Classica hills of northeastern Italy, an area with varied soils and microclimates. The Boscaini family purchased their first plot, called “Vaio dei Masi,” in 1772 and has continued to cultivate grapes like Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, and the rediscovered Oseleta. A key element of production is the Appassimento method, in which grapes are dried for at least 100 days to create Amarone, Recioto, and double-fermentation styles such as Ripasso.
The company has expanded into multiple areas, Veneto, Friuli, Trentino, Tuscany, and Argentina, always emphasizing local grape varieties. Guided by the Masi Technical Group, ongoing research merges long-held methods with modern practices. The new headquarters, “Monteleone21,” sits mostly below ground beneath vines and stone walls, evoking the look of traditional terraces. Inside, a 12-meter-high space is reserved for drying grapes, as well as a spacious zone with a wine shop, bar, and restaurant.
Monteleone21 places strong focus on renewable resources, with geothermal and photovoltaic systems that minimize energy use. These efforts earned recognition in the Best of Wine Tourism competition organized by Great Wine Capitals and the Verona Chamber of Commerce.
Through the Masi Foundation, the winery supports cultural and educational initiatives, including the Masi Prize, which honors individuals who enrich wine-related customs. Today, Masi wines reach about 140 countries, showing a passion for each stage of production and respect for local origins and traditions.
