Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Pietro Junior” by Pietro Zardini
From a collaboration between these historic family winemakers in San Pietro in Cariano and the best vintage in recent years comes this stunning Amarone, made with exclusively traditional Valpolicella varieties. A true expression of place and style.
Winemaking: hand-harvested grapes individually selected for quality and suitability. Extraordinary drying time, over three months, with a fermentation period of over one month, before going into oak for three years and held back in bottles prior to relese.
Assemblage: corvina 70%, rondinella 20%, molinara 10%.
Soil: eroded basalt and marl.
Alcohol: 15%.
Colour: closer to red than true purple, with translucent gemstone-red rim.
Aroma: strong oak spice, tobacco-leaf and hints of coffee.
Palate: full but balanced, strong but not excessive tannins give it a solid foundation, reminiscent of plums soaked in brandy as well as the trademark cherries. Cocoa powder and black pepper complete the effect wonderfully.
Ageability: probably around its peak now and will continue to be so for five to seven years.
Pairing: a steak wine, for sure, though wild boar ragù would certainly hit the spot nicely.
