Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
Amarone della Valpolicella Docg “Cavolo” by Brigaldara, Magnum 1.5L
Amarone Cavolo is made through a careful winemaking process that begins with the selection of the best grapes in the vineyard. Only the sparsest and best exposed bunches are picked for this wine. They are then left to dry in a controlled environment for around 120 days, which concentrates the noble components of the grapes and carries them into the wine.
The grapes are fermented in contact with the skins, for maximum extraction of colour and flavour. To support that extraction, the wine is pumped over twice a day, with a delestage half way through fermentation.
The wine is then aged in wooden barrels for at least 4 years, 2 years in small barrels and 2 years in large ones. That aging gives the wine its structure, complexity and elegance.
In the glass, Amarone Cavolo shows a deep garnet red and opens on fruit jam, sour cherry, cherry and vanilla, with fine notes of dried grapes and spice. On the palate it is velvety, complex and elegant, rich and full bodied.
Why a magnum
A 1.5 litre bottle holds the equivalent of two standard bottles. The larger volume ages more slowly against the same amount of oxygen, so an Amarone in magnum keeps its fruit and its freshness longer and rewards time in the cellar. It is also the right format for a table of six or more. For shipping, one magnum counts as two bottles.

Brigaldara represents a broad view of Valpolicella, bringing together multiple perspectives, stories, and generations in a single “wine chest.” The property spans over 120 hectares of land, 47 of them devoted to vines, across three areas of Verona: Valpolicella Classica, Valpantena, and Eastern Valpolicella. Owned by the Cesari family since 1928, Brigaldara combines centuries-old traditions with fresh insights from a team of young agronomists and enologists, each vineyard managed according to its specific characteristics.
Historic mentions of “Brigaldara,” “Bragaldara,” or “Bragadara” first appear in 12th-century documents. Over the centuries, the estate was referenced as fertile land for vines and olives. The 16th-century villa at its center is surrounded by meadows, woods, and carefully terraced vineyards on Monte Masua. By 1928, Renzo Cesar had acquired the property and, together with his family, introduced specialized viticulture that gained new momentum in the 1980s through work with Roberto Ferrarini, a significant innovator in Amarone and Valpolicella. The estate’s Amarone received its first national recognition in 1997.
Today, Brigaldara’s holdings include hillside sites in Marano and Grezzana as well as new plantings in Marcellise. Traditional local varieties, Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and the once-neglected Oseleta, thrive in these different terroirs. The environment is a diverse combination of olive groves, woodlands, truffle grounds, and grazing lands, forming a functional ecosystem. In the Case Vecie section, forestry, stone-wall maintenance, and the reintroduction of sheep highlight the farm’s approach to harmony between agriculture and nature.
In the cellar, every vintage is shaped by the year’s conditions. Amarone and Recioto benefit from a two-stage wood-aging process: first, they rest in small barrels to promote oxygenation and stabilize color, then they complete their maturation in large Slavonian oak casks. This method aligns with Brigaldara’s return to a lighter, fresher style of Valpolicella, balanced in structure without being overbearing in sugar or alcohol. It emphasizes the crisp aromas of the native grapes, underlining the diversity that defines Valpolicella’s thousand-year-old wine tradition.
