Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Amarone della Valpolicella Docg by Corte Canella
Impressions:
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG by Corte Canella stands as an elegant, refined, and robust wine, perfectly aligning with the winery’s aspirations to produce exceptional wines. Its sophistication is evident in every glass.
Concept:
The goal is to craft an Amarone that honors traditional methods while improving its character through diligent care in the vineyard. This approach aims to highlight the unique attributes of the grapes, presenting an Amarone that is true to its roots.
Features:
A blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Croatina grapes is used, focusing on maintaining their inherent potency. The grapes are withered for 70 to 90 days, followed by a slow fermentation process of approximately 15 days at a controlled temperature. The wine undergoes maturation for 36 months in 50% new barriques, followed by two years in the bottle, which ensures its complex and profound flavor.
Pairings:
This Amarone is a perfect match for braised meats, roasts, and game, enhancing the taste of spicy, aged cheeses. It also pairs well with chocolate, making it suitable for serene winter evenings by a book and fireplace, offering a moment for quiet contemplation.
Visual Analysis: Showcasing a deep garnet red color, the wine hints at its rich character.
Olfactory Analysis: Aromas of dried fruits and cherries dominate the nose, supported by a smooth tannin structure that adds complexity and finesse.
Gustatory Analysis: The palate experiences a balanced harmony of alcohol warmth, with licorice and chocolate notes, and a discreet wood presence. Its finish is enduring and fulfilling, reflecting the wine’s exceptional quality.
Recommendation: To fully appreciate its qualities, opening the wine 3-4 hours before serving is advised.

Corte Canella takes shape in Cellore, a village east of Verona. Long devoted to growing grapes, the family began making wine in 2009 when Francesco decided to reshape his life. Together with his wife Adriana, he established the winery, and their daughter Gloria soon added her own vision to the project.
Their vineyards lie on the hills of Val d’Illasi, about 200 meters above sea level, where stony alluvial soils favour viticulture. All grapes are selected by hand, then partially dried for two to four months (appassimento) before vinification. Gentle pressing preserves the natural character of each variety, with modern systems managing fermentation to highlight aroma and flavour.
Wood is applied thoughtfully, never dominating the fruit. In keeping with local tradition, 225-liter barriques are used to produce wines known for an energetic and bold personality. Each bottle celebrates the path from vine to finished wine and sets the stage for fresh possibilities.
The winery’s label features “Ampelio”, a figure carrying a basket of grapes whose shadow is shaped like a bottle. This image sums up the family’s approach: carefully tending their own vines, guiding each cluster, and turning it into something that leaves a memorable mark. Their aim is to create wines with an exuberant spirit, always ready to surprise.
