Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year, one of the best of its decade. A hot summer and a small harvest of top grapes.
One of the best years of the decade: a smaller crop of excellent quality.
A cold autumn and winter with plenty of rain refilled the soils. Budbreak came about 7 days earlier than in 2008, and flowering very early. Heavy rain and some hail in early July did no real damage. August was torrid, comparable only to 2003. September brought wide swings between day and night and very little rain, ideal for picking, which began on 9 September.

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Pietro dal Cero” by Ca’ dei Frati
Special release dedicated to the father of the winemakers from the deservedly renowned Ca’ dei Frati. A wonderfully distinctive Amarone – fresher than is usual in the style, though retaining that requisite intensity and packing a quite extraordinary alcoholic punch. This is a special wine from special winemakers that is still getting better.
Winemaking: grapes hand-picked from the Luxinum vineyard in Pian di Castagnè. Following fermentation the wine spends two years in barriques, 12 months in stainless steel and a further two years in bottle before release.
Soil: clay, shingle and some limestone.
Assemblage: corvina veronese 70%, corvinone veronese 5%, rondinella 5%, croatina 5%.
Alcohol: 17%.
Colour: dark ruby with shades of amethyst.
Aroma: lively, sour fruit with characteristic cocoa and peppery spice.
Palate: fresh, vibrant acidity with great depth of fruit, with trademark sour cherries to the fore as well as touches of chewing tobacco and old balsamic vinegar. Great, slightly bitter spice and even a touch of grassiness.
Ageability: with its freshness and high alcohol, this has all the ingredients to age for decades.
Pairing: slow-cooked meat stews of course, as well as ones with a tomato base like ragù alla napoletana (‘o ‘rrau’). Cheese of all kinds, but perhaps especially pecorino with peppercorns.

Ca’ dei Frati can trace its origins to a document from 1782 referring to “a house with a cellar in Lugana in the Sermion district known as the place of the Friars.” In 1939, Felice Dal Cero, whose family had already cultivated vines in Montecchia di Crosara near Verona, settled in that very location, drawn by its promise for grape growing. Over time, and thanks to years of effort in the vineyards and in the cellar, his son Pietro contributed to the formation of the local DOC in 1969, bottling the first wine under the name Lugana Casa dei Frati, which later became Ca’ dei Frati. In 2012, Pietro passed away, leaving the family estate to his wife Santa Rosa and children Igino, Gian Franco, and Anna Maria, who maintain the same drive that has guided them for decades.
Each vineyard’s grapes are processed separately to capture the distinct traits of the land. The winery uses a precise, ever-evolving technique that favours balance and longevity while respecting the integrity of the fruit. Ongoing collaboration with friends such as Gino Veronelli helped shape decisions about refining and maturing the wines.
The vineyards extend around the southern shore of Lake Garda, where Ca’ dei Frati has been practicing viticulture for four generations. Every day of the year, from the vine’s reawakening in spring to the moment of harvest, plays a pivotal role. This careful approach results in wines that reflect their origin, built on an understanding of the region and the vines that have flourished there for many decades.
