Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico 2001 by Bertani

A classic expression of Bertani’s Amarone, the 2001 vintage reflects a style built on balance, structure, and long aging rather than immediate intensity.

Produced from Corvina and Rondinella grapes selected for appassimento, the wine follows the traditional drying process, concentrating both sugars and aromas before fermentation into a dry, structured Amarone.

The 2001 vintage shows a deep garnet red color. On the nose, it opens with notes of ripe cherry, plum, and dried fruit, followed by layers of licorice, spices, tea leaf, and tobacco.

On the palate, it is full and composed, with a clear structure where freshness and tannins support the richness of the fruit. Red berry flavors, subtle vanilla tones from long aging, and a savory backbone lead to a long, persistent finish.

Bertani’s signature approach is evident: elegance over power, precision over excess. The wine develops slowly, offering complexity and harmony with time, and confirming its strong aging potential.

About Bertani

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.

One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.

Bertani’s overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.

With vineyards in sought-after districts of Valpolicella, Soave, and beyond, the winery has developed a range that highlights the distinction of each zone. Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties. Through measured innovation and an enduring regard for tradition, Bertani holds a significant place in the Italian wine landscape.
