Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Valle Alta” by Tenute Ugolini
The Amarone della Valpolicella Docg Classico “Valle Alta” is not simply a wine, it is an encapsulation of art, history, and emotion. Much like the sentiments penned by Berto Barbarani, this exquisite wine displays the hues of enchanting sunrises and dramatic sunsets. It articulates wisdom comparable to the eloquence of Nestore, harmonizing with lyricism akin to the verses of Orazio and Catullo. The wine expresses a longing that mirrors the intensity of Aleardi’s verses, and its wittiness is reminiscent of the poems penned by Cesare and Vittorio Betteloni.
The Valle Alta vineyard, from where the magic unfolds, is situated at an ideal elevation of 256 metres. The soil, rich in marlstone, and perfect positioning make it a paradisiacal cradle for the Amarone grapes. The vineyard yields Corvina gentile, Corvina grossa, Rondinella, and Oseleta – the heart and soul of this wine.
The winemaking process is a delicate labour of love. Once harvested, the grapes are gently placed into small boxes and carried to our drying rooms where they lose more than 50% of their original weight. These hand-sorted grapes are then carefully pressed and fermented, following which the wine undergoes an aging process of at least 36 months in Barrique and Tonneau barrels. A further two years of bottle aging polishes this nectar to perfection.
The wine itself is a poetry in a glass, displaying an intense ruby red colour with reflections of pomegranate. A swirl of the glass releases tantalizing hints of red fruit jam, cherries preserved in alcohol, Marasca cherries and dried fruit. A deeper exploration reveals sweet spicy notes of tobacco, coffee, cocoa, liquorice, and nutmeg that offer an engaging complexity. On the palate, it is a symphony of velvety, full-bodied, and elegant tastes that remain smooth yet dry.
Perfect for pairing with a variety of food options, this wine splendidly complements strong and mature cheeses, succulent cured meats, pot roasts, game or grilled meats. For those with a sweet tooth, it pairs perfectly with dark chocolate, provided it’s not too bitter. The Amarone della Valpolicella Docg Classico “Valle Alta” is more than a wine, it’s an experience that tantalizes your senses and leaves a lasting impression.
