Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
Amarone della Valpolicella Docg by Comaroto Dal Forno Bros
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2021 by Comaroto is a powerful yet balanced Amarone from the high hills of Illasi, in the eastern side of Valpolicella. It is produced with a blend of 60% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 10% Oseleta and 10% Croatina, from vineyards between 40 and 60 years old.
Comaroto was created by the Dal Forno family as a project rooted in memory, family identity and precise vineyard work. The name comes from “comare”, the midwife, a role held by Ernesto Dal Forno’s mother in Val d’Illasi in the early 1900s. Over time, “Comaroto” became a family nickname, now used for a wine project that connects the rigor of the Dal Forno method with a more contemporary reading of Valpolicella.
The grapes come from limestone, silt and clay soils, which help give the wine balance, tension and complexity. Harvest takes place between September 10th and October 15th, with strict manual selection of the best bunches. The grapes are then dried for about three months in large open rooms with controlled ventilation, concentrating aromas and structure while preserving freshness.
After pressing in mid December, the wine ferments in stainless steel at around 28°C for about 15 days, followed by final maceration. It then ages for 24 months in new barriques and a further 24 months in bottle before release.
In the glass, it is dense, deep and persistent. The nose opens with black cherry, blueberry and chocolate, followed by darker notes of truffle, tobacco and new leather. On the palate, it is opulent but dynamic, with impressive structure, fresh energy and a long, balanced finish.
This Amarone is ideal for those looking for a rich, modern and carefully made expression of Valpolicella, with power, depth and precision.

Comaroto Winery – Val d’Illasi, Verona
Comaroto is a young winery with deep family roots in the Val d’Illasi, one of the most important areas for Amarone production in the eastern side of Valpolicella.
The project belongs to the Dal Forno family and was born from a desire to create wines that respect local tradition while speaking with a clean, precise and modern style.
The name “Comaroto” comes from a family nickname linked to the figure of the comare, the midwife, a role held by Ernesto Dal Forno’s mother in the early 1900s. Over time, this name became part of the family identity and today represents a new chapter in their wine story.
In the vineyard, the focus is on careful manual work, strict grape selection and respect for the natural rhythm of the land. In the cellar, Comaroto follows the traditional methods of Valpolicella, including appassimento for Amarone, while keeping the wines precise, balanced and expressive.
Production is limited and quality driven, with particular attention to Amarone della Valpolicella and Valpolicella Superiore. The result is a range of wines that combine depth, structure and freshness, with a clear connection to the hills of Val d’Illasi.
