Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Costasera” 2019 Magnum 1.5L
Riserva Costasera is produced by Masi Agricola in the Valpolicella Classico zone of the Veneto, in the hills west of Verona near Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella. The blend for the 2019 vintage is Corvina 70%, Rondinella 15%, Oseleta 10% and Molinara 5%, with all varieties dried for approximately 120 days on bamboo racks in specialised lofts using the traditional appassimento method. The Oseleta, a rare autochthonous Veronese variety rediscovered by Masi, is dried alongside the other grapes and contributes additional aromatic complexity, wild berry character, and fine persistent tannins. Following fermentation, the wine was aged for up to 40 months in 600-litre Slavonian oak and Allier oak casks, with one third new oak. The 2019 vintage carries 15.5% alcohol by volume and a residual sugar of approximately 10 g/L, reflecting the concentration achieved through the extended drying process.
Masi Agricola is a well-established producer based in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, with deep roots in the Valpolicella Classico area. The estate is closely associated with the appassimento technique, which underpins its Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG wines, including the Costasera Riserva. Masi is widely recognized as a reference point for Amarone production and has long been involved in research into traditional Venetian winemaking methods.

Masi Winery has its roots in the Valpolicella Classica hills of north-eastern Italy, an area with varied soils and microclimates. The Boscaini family purchased their first plot, called “Vaio dei Masi,” in 1772 and has continued to cultivate grapes like Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, and the rediscovered Oseleta. A key element of production is the Appassimento method, in which grapes are dried for at least 100 days to create Amarone, Recioto, and double-fermentation styles such as Ripasso.
The company has expanded into multiple areas, Veneto, Friuli, Trentino, Tuscany, and Argentina, always emphasizing local grape varieties. Guided by the Masi Technical Group, ongoing research merges long-held methods with modern practices. The new headquarters, “Monteleone21,” sits mostly below ground beneath vines and stone walls, evoking the look of traditional terraces. Inside, a 12-meter-high space is reserved for drying grapes, as well as a spacious zone with a wine shop, bar, and restaurant.
Monteleone21 places strong focus on renewable resources, with geothermal and photovoltaic systems that minimize energy use. These efforts earned recognition in the Best of Wine Tourism competition organized by Great Wine Capitals and the Verona Chamber of Commerce.
Through the Masi Foundation, the winery supports cultural and educational initiatives, including the Masi Prize, which honours individuals who enrich wine-related customs. Today, Masi wines reach about 140 countries, showing a passion for each stage of production and respect for local origins and traditions.
