Vintage 2013
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A rainy spring, then a hot, sunny summer.
A cold, rainy spring and then a hot summer; careful vineyard work gave excellent results.
March and the spring were wet and cool: May alone had 18 rainy days and 229 mm, delaying flowering by about ten days. July and August were fine and hot. Hail struck the Classico zone on 24 August. From late August through September, wide swings between day and night built rich colour and tannin, and picking began at the usual time, from 20 September, with only scattered rain.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2013 by Clementi
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2013 by Clementi is the result of careful grape selection and extended aging, bringing out depth and complexity. Made from 65% Corvina and Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, and 5% Molinara, this Amarone follows the traditional Pergola Veronese training system, allowing the grapes to develop richness while maintaining balance.
Winemaking and Aging
Hand-harvested in September, the finest bunches are left to dry in small wooden crates for three to four months, concentrating their flavors and enhancing their aromatic profile. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, where daily pump-overs and delestage improve extraction, the wine is left unfiltered and aged for seven years in 30hl oak barrels, followed by an additional year of bottle refinement before release.
Tasting Notes
This deep ruby red Amarone carries layered aromas of ripe red and black fruits, cherry preserves, marasca plum, and dried figs. Spiced notes of cinnamon and nutmeg add warmth and complexity. On the palate, the structure is bold yet refined, with an alcohol content of 16.5% and balanced acidity (6.8 g/l), leading to a long, expressive finish.
Serving Suggestions
Best enjoyed at 16–18°C, this wine should be uncorked at least three hours in advance and served in large balloon glasses to allow the aromas to develop fully. Its concentration and depth pair well with braised meats, aged cheeses, and game dishes, while also standing beautifully on its own as a contemplative wine.

Clementi Winery: A Story Rooted in Valpolicella
Pietro Clementi’s journey from law to winemaking began with memories of his childhood in Illasi during World War II. Growing up in a family of lawyers, he developed a deep connection to the land, shaped by the traditional vineyard work of the time, manual grape pressing, small-basket harvesting, and ox-drawn plows. These early experiences eventually led him to leave his legal career behind and focus on producing wine.
In 1969, Pietro acquired a historic 17th-century estate in the Gnirega Contrada of Marano di Valpolicella. Spanning twenty hectares of vineyards and woodland, this property became the foundation for his winemaking project. Initially, production took place in a small cellar at his home, with guidance from experienced local farmers and producers, including the meticulous sharecropper "Musciol" and the well-respected Santo Aldrighetti.
Over time, Pietro refined his craft, selecting grapes carefully and replanting older vineyards. His Amarone was initially reserved for family, friends, and political gatherings, earning the nickname “The Mayor’s Amarone.” However, in 2002, he expanded his vision, modernizing the winery and shifting towards larger-scale production for both national and international markets.
A Family-Run Estate
Today, Clementi Winery is run by Pietro’s three children: Maria, Maurizio, and Bernardino. Each plays a key role, Maria manages administration, Maurizio oversees marketing and sales, while Bernardino leads production, still under their father’s guidance. The family has also partnered with Veneto-based oenologist Enrico Nicolis to refine their approach.
The Valpolicella Classica Region
The winery is situated in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica area, known for its long tradition of winemaking. This historic region, north of Verona and east of Lake Garda, benefits from the protective influence of the Lessini Mountains. Valpolicella is divided into three recognized production zones: Classica, Valpantena, and the wider Valpolicella DOC area.
Clementi Winery’s vineyards, covering 14 hectares at 300 to 400 meters of altitude, are planted primarily with native grape varieties: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, Oseleta, and Croatina. The vines grow on traditional stone terraces, known as "marogne," facing southwest, a prime location for quality viticulture. The region’s limestone and clay-rich soil, combined with a mild, Mediterranean-leaning climate, creates ideal conditions for growing balanced and expressive grapes.
Respect for Tradition and Sustainability
Clementi Winery is part of the Federation of Independent Winemakers (FIVI), an association dedicated to preserving local identity and ensuring that winemakers oversee the entire process, from vineyard management to bottling. The family is also committed to sustainable practices, adhering to the National Integrated Production Quality System (SQNPI), which minimizes environmental impact through careful agronomic choices, reduced chemical treatments, and responsible water use.
With deep roots in Valpolicella, Clementi Winery continues to honor both tradition and innovation, crafting wines that reflect the character of the land while embracing a thoughtful approach to production.
