Vintage 2020
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
Valpolicella Doc Classico Superiore 2020 by Clementi
The Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore 2020 by Clementi comes from vineyards in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, where the Clementi family has cultivated grapes for generations. Their 17th-century estate in Marano di Valpolicella spans vineyards planted on traditional stone terraces, benefiting from limestone and clay-rich soils at 300–400 meters above sea level.
Made from hand-harvested Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes, this wine undergoes fermentation with extended skin contact to develop color and structure. Aged for two years in 30hl French oak barrels, it reveals a garnet-red hue with aromas of pear, cherries, and red berries, complemented by a delicate touch of vanilla. The palate is smooth and well-balanced, with fresh acidity and soft tannins that make it approachable yet layered.
With an alcohol content of 13.5%, this Valpolicella Superiore is best served at cellar temperature. Its versatility makes it an excellent choice for classic Italian cuisine, from risottos to roasted meats and aged cheeses.

Clementi Winery: A Story Rooted in Valpolicella
Pietro Clementi’s journey from law to winemaking began with memories of his childhood in Illasi during World War II. Growing up in a family of lawyers, he developed a deep connection to the land, shaped by the traditional vineyard work of the time, manual grape pressing, small-basket harvesting, and ox-drawn plows. These early experiences eventually led him to leave his legal career behind and focus on producing wine.
In 1969, Pietro acquired a historic 17th-century estate in the Gnirega Contrada of Marano di Valpolicella. Spanning twenty hectares of vineyards and woodland, this property became the foundation for his winemaking project. Initially, production took place in a small cellar at his home, with guidance from experienced local farmers and producers, including the meticulous sharecropper "Musciol" and the well-respected Santo Aldrighetti.
Over time, Pietro refined his craft, selecting grapes carefully and replanting older vineyards. His Amarone was initially reserved for family, friends, and political gatherings, earning the nickname “The Mayor’s Amarone.” However, in 2002, he expanded his vision, modernizing the winery and shifting towards larger-scale production for both national and international markets.
A Family-Run Estate
Today, Clementi Winery is run by Pietro’s three children: Maria, Maurizio, and Bernardino. Each plays a key role, Maria manages administration, Maurizio oversees marketing and sales, while Bernardino leads production, still under their father’s guidance. The family has also partnered with Veneto-based oenologist Enrico Nicolis to refine their approach.
The Valpolicella Classica Region
The winery is situated in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica area, known for its long tradition of winemaking. This historic region, north of Verona and east of Lake Garda, benefits from the protective influence of the Lessini Mountains. Valpolicella is divided into three recognized production zones: Classica, Valpantena, and the wider Valpolicella DOC area.
Clementi Winery’s vineyards, covering 14 hectares at 300 to 400 meters of altitude, are planted primarily with native grape varieties: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, Oseleta, and Croatina. The vines grow on traditional stone terraces, known as "marogne," facing southwest, a prime location for quality viticulture. The region’s limestone and clay-rich soil, combined with a mild, Mediterranean-leaning climate, creates ideal conditions for growing balanced and expressive grapes.
Respect for Tradition and Sustainability
Clementi Winery is part of the Federation of Independent Winemakers (FIVI), an association dedicated to preserving local identity and ensuring that winemakers oversee the entire process, from vineyard management to bottling. The family is also committed to sustainable practices, adhering to the National Integrated Production Quality System (SQNPI), which minimizes environmental impact through careful agronomic choices, reduced chemical treatments, and responsible water use.
With deep roots in Valpolicella, Clementi Winery continues to honor both tradition and innovation, crafting wines that reflect the character of the land while embracing a thoughtful approach to production.
