Vintage 2017
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.

Viticulture and Vinification: The Cà dei Conti estate, located at the foot of Precastio Mountain in Tregnano, spans 5 hectares. The south-facing vineyard, situated at 400 – 450 meters above sea level, thrives in marl-limestone morainal soil, which contributes to the wine’s robust structure and alcohol richness. Planted in a dense Guyot system with 9,000 plants per hectare, each vine yields only 1kg of grapes.
Harvesting occurs in late October, with manual selection of grapes to ensure optimal ripeness. The grapes undergo 100 – 120 days of drying in controlled conditions. Pressing starts in January/February, followed by a maceration period with grape skins for 15 days at 8°C. Fermentation lasts 25 – 30 days at 20° – 23°C with gentle, continuous skin contact. The wine is then decanted, cleaned, and aged in French barriques with its own peels to complete the alcohol and malolactic fermentation over four years, followed by 12 months of bottle aging.
Tasting Notes: This wine exhibits a rich, ruby-violet color with a warm and intense bouquet. Aromas of cherry, strawberry, nuts, vanilla, cocoa, and spices dominate the nose. It is a wine of great structure, elegance, and depth.
Pairing Suggestions: Perfect with grilled red meat, roast beef, beef tagliata, roasts with rich sauces, and venison. It also complements hard, aged cheeses, particularly those with a hint of spice. An excellent choice for contemplative enjoyment at the end of a meal.
Sustainability: Cà dei Conti’s Organic Amarone reflects the estate’s commitment to sustainable practices and quality. This wine, produced using certified organic methods, showcases the unique complexity of Valpolicella’s terroir, resulting from careful grape selection and meticulous processing. Renzo and Fabio’s passion is evident in every sip of this powerful, elegant, and profound wine.

Ca' dei Conti Winery – Valpolicella with Character
In the rolling hills of Tregnago, within the Val d’Illasi, the Ca' dei Conti winery carries forward a tradition rooted in respect for the land and the craftsmanship of winemaking. Established in 2006 by siblings Renzo and Loredana Rancan, the estate revives a long-standing legacy of viticulture with a focus on quality, sustainability, and authentic expression of the territory.
The vineyards are planted with both traditional and lesser-known native varieties, including Croatina and Oseleta, carefully cultivated to yield small but highly concentrated harvests. A strong commitment to organic and sustainable farming defines every stage of production, from vineyard management to winemaking techniques that highlight the character of the grapes while minimizing intervention.
A Focus on Sustainability and Craftsmanship
Ca' dei Conti follows a philosophy of precision and balance, ensuring that each wine reflects the nuances of its terroir. The estate practices dense vine planting, 9,000 vines per hectare, with low-yielding plants to enhance fruit quality. Grapes are hand-harvested and selected with care, followed by extended drying periods for wines requiring additional depth and complexity.
The winery is part of FIVI (Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers) and has earned recognition from Slow Wine for its dedication to sustainable viticulture. One of its standout wines, "TANO" Organic Amarone DOCG, embodies this approach, made from certified organic grapes that thrive in the mineral-rich limestone and marl soils of the estate.
The Role of Resistant Varieties (PIWI) in Sustainable Viticulture
Innovation plays a key role in the winery’s commitment to environmental responsibility. By cultivating resistant grape varieties (PIWI), Ca' dei Conti reduces the need for chemical treatments while maintaining high-quality production. These varieties, developed through centuries of careful crossbreeding, allow for minimal intervention, preserving biodiversity and ensuring the long-term health of the vineyards.
A Taste of Valpolicella
The Valpolicella DOC region extends beyond its well-known valleys, encompassing unique microclimates that influence the winery’s production. The estate’s high-altitude vineyards benefit from full southern exposure, allowing for excellent ripening conditions while maintaining freshness in the wines. The result is a collection of wines with refined structure, balanced acidity, and layers of complexity that showcase the potential of Valpolicella’s terroir.
At Ca’ dei Conti, every bottle tells the story of careful craftsmanship, sustainable choices, and the deep connection between the land and the people who cultivate it.
