Vintage 2022
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A hot, dry year. Drought tested the vines, but rain in August helped them recover.
Hot, dry and early: the year of drought, managed through careful work on water.
From January to July only 190 mm of rain fell against an average of 450, a deficit of 60%, and May to July were hot. Young vines and vines on light soils suffered water stress, but rain in August helped most of them recover. Veraison came in late July, about two weeks early, and picking began around 5 September. Disease pressure stayed low; local hail fell in August and September.
Valpolicella Ripasso Doc Classico Superiore “Sottolago” by Tenuta Villa Bellini
Produced through the traditional ripasso method, the Sottolago 2022 combines the intensity of Amarone with the freshness of Valpolicella Superiore. After the Amarone fermentation is completed, the wine is re-passed over its marcs and then aged for about two years in the historic cellar of Villa Bellini. The result is a wine of depth and balance, true to its land and style.
Tasting Notes
Sottolago is generous and elegant, with aromas of ripe red fruit, dark spices, and undergrowth. On the palate it is rich, structured, and smooth, finishing dry and graceful. A wine with substance that remains enjoyable from the first glass to the last.
Vintage 2022
A season marked by contrasts: mild winter, cool spring, and a warm, dry summer. Limited rainfall, well distributed throughout the year, allowed excellent vineyard management. Yields were intentionally kept low (40 q/Ha), resulting in concentrated grapes with fine balance between sugars and acidity.
Vineyard and Terroir
Tenuta Villa Bellini extends over four walled hectares on the slopes of Castelrotto at about 150 meters above sea level. The eastern and southeastern exposures, limestone soils, and natural springs contribute to the structure and aromatic purity of the wines. Organic farming and diverse vine training systems — alberello, pergola, and the historic tirele — give this small estate a unique character.
Serving & Pairing
Excellent with full-flavoured or aromatic cheeses (including blue and soft-rind types), legume soups, rich pasta dishes, red meats, game, and aged salumi.

Tenuta Villa Bellini stands on a lush hillside of Castelrotto, in San Pietro in Cariano, Valpolicella Classica. The estate, dating back to the 18th century, is surrounded by ancient cypress trees, chestnuts, traditional dry stone "marogne," and features a hidden spring within a cave, along with a tranquil pond that gently merges into surrounding woodlands.
The vineyards span four hectares, forming a carefully preserved "brolo," or walled garden, on terraced slopes facing east and southeast at an elevation of 150 meters. Richly diverse soils, abundant in limestone and underground springs, provide depth and distinctive aromas to the organically grown native grape varieties: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara, along with selected ancient Veronese vines.
Organic cultivation here is a conscious choice rooted in respect for biodiversity. Vineyard management prioritizes green manure, selective mowing to sustain pollinator populations, and precise, minimal organic treatments tailored to individual vineyard needs. Vine-training methods include traditional pergolas and high-density vertical espaliers, nurturing vines aged from 20 to over 100 years.
At Tenuta Villa Bellini, grapes are harvested and selected entirely by hand, with spontaneous fermentation and microvinification techniques emphasizing minimal intervention. Each vintage naturally expresses the authentic personality of the terroir.
The philosophy at Villa Bellini is clear and sincere: return the earth’s gifts in their purest form, letting each wine speak genuinely of its unique place of origin.
