Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
Valpolicella Ripasso Doc Superiore “Morandina” by Graziano Prà
The Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Superiore “Morandina” by Villa della Torre is crafted from vineyards in the Mezzane and Tregnago regions, where vines over 20 years old grow on limestone soils at an altitude of 450 meters, with southeast exposure. The blend of Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella grapes undergoes a late October harvest, featuring vine-cutting and a month of drying on the plant. This Ripasso is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, which imparts depth and complexity.
The wine pours a deep, luminous ruby-red color. On the nose, it offers rich, warm aromas of wild blackberry, black cherry, overripe plum, and candied orange, which are layered with earthy notes of wet stone, graphite, tobacco, black pepper, wilted rose, and a subtle menthol finish. On the palate, the “Morandina” reveals a satisfying richness, with elegant tannins and refreshing acidity that provide structure and persistence, making the wine both vibrant and clean.
As winemaker Graziano explains, “This wine represents my desire to express the character of my land without constraints or imposed techniques. It’s a free, balanced wine, one that I’ve envisioned and worked on for many years.”
This Ripasso pairs perfectly with earthy, flavorful dishes rich in spices, particularly those rooted in the region’s traditional cuisine.

Graziano Prà focuses on Soave and Valpolicella wines, relying on hillside vineyards in prime locations. In Soave, volcanic soils define around forty hectares of vines, while in Valpolicella there are eight hectares with flaky calcareous composition influenced by cooler currents from the Lessini Mountains. Each parcel adds character through its microclimate and native grape varieties, Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave in one area, Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Oseleta in the other.
Raised in a winemaking family, Graziano Prà values grapes that speak authentically of where they grow. By studying and testing different approaches over time, he chose technological screw caps to best preserve freshness and longevity, particularly important for Soave wines. Work in the cellar follows precise steps: yields are kept low, grapes are carefully selected, and fermentation temperatures remain controlled. White wines avoid malolactic fermentation, and only free-run must is used to highlight varietal character. Throughout this process, inert gas helps prevent oxidation, and minimal handling after fermentation ensures natural purity.
Renewable energy, primarily solar, powers the winery, showing respect for the land that supports these vineyards. Every decision, from sustainable viticultural practices to specific cellar methods, aims to achieve wines with lasting elegance and clarity, revealing a true sense of place in Soave and Valpolicella.
