Description

Recioto Valpolicella Amarone DOC Classico Superiore 1968 by Bertani

A rare historical bottle from Bertani that tells an important chapter of Valpolicella. Despite the name on the label, this wine is 100% Amarone in style and production. At the time, the term “Amarone” had not yet been fully formalized, and wines of this kind were still referred to as Recioto Amarone.

The 1968 vintage comes from a balanced growing season with a dry September that allowed optimal ripening of the grapes, resulting in a wine of depth and precision.

In the glass, it shows a mature garnet color with brick reflections. The nose is complex and evolved, with layers of dried fruit, spices, sandalwood and pine, alongside notes of tobacco and almond that deepen with time.

On the palate, it is rich and velvety, with a savory backbone. Flavors of anise, dried fruit and slightly bitter nuances define the profile, supported by soft tannins and a long, persistent finish.

This wine reflects Bertani’s signature style: balance, composure and elegance over power, with a structure designed for very long aging.

About Bertani

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.

One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.

Bertani’s overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.

With vineyards in sought-after districts of Valpolicella, Soave, and beyond, the winery has developed a range that highlights the distinction of each zone. Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties. Through measured innovation and an enduring regard for tradition, Bertani holds a significant place in the Italian wine landscape.
