An excellent year. Good weather all season and a perfect autumn for drying the grapes.
A large crop, of high quality where growers thinned the bunches, and an excellent drying season.
A rainy spring refilled the soils, and the summer went well; hail only grazed the area. Harvest came at the normal time, in dry weather with good night cooling, from 1 October for the drying grapes. The main issue was quantity: growers who cut bunches before veraison got high quality, and the first wines showed rich colour and body. Dry, breezy, cool weather during drying let some producers rest the grapes longer than usual, raising the sugar further.
Dry picking conditions are recorded in the regional report. Bertani’s archive adds a tasting perspective: Nick Jackson MW describes warm, soft fruit and savory umami notes in its Amarone Classico, which the estate places in its Delicatezza stylistic category. Jackson also identifies mature aromas reminiscent of old books and a lingering sweet fragrance, while describing relatively modest complexity. Bertani’s technical record lists 15.3% alcohol and 5.7 g/L residual sugar. This particular Amarone was bottled in 2011, seven years after harvest.

Bertani themselves rated this a five-star year (as did we!), and it’s easy to see why. Over the years it’s retained all of the desirable aspects of young Amarone wine while gaining and gaining in all those long-term, tertiary aspects that we know and love.
Assemblage: Corvina 80%, rondinella 20%.
Alcohol: 15%
Colour: Still a deep garnet colour but tending towards red-brick around the rim.
Aroma: Extraordinary plums and cherries, but more towards maraschino than amarena. Wonderfully perfumed, but with subtle undercurrents of balsamic, earthiness, even a hint of wild mushroom.
Palate: Remarkably soft and fresh, with beautifully integrated tannin and shining purity and variety of flavours on the mid-palate, with the longest of finishes.
Ageing: Still probably has a decade plus in it – in fact, you could keep this one virtually for as long as you like, and it would still yield rewards.

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.
One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.
Bertani’s overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.

Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties.
