Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An exceptional year. A hot, dry summer and an early harvest of very healthy grapes.
A year of extremes: record heat and little rain, with healthy grapes and an early harvest.
The winter was warm, and the following months set twenty year records for maximum temperatures, July above all. April and July were very dry. Flowering came early, in late May and early June, and the heat of July and August did not slow ripening. The hot, dry weather kept downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis away, while careful vineyard work eased the stress on the vines. Harvest from about 10 September.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Monte Lodoletta” 2015 by Romano Dal Forno
The Amarone “Monte Lodoletta” by Romano Dal Forno is a standout expression of Valpolicellaโs winemaking tradition. Known for its depth, complexity, and refined structure, this wine undergoes an extensive aging process in barriques, allowing it to develop remarkable balance and finesse.
Produced from carefully selected Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes, this Amarone comes from the hills of Val d’Illasi, an area northwest of Verona with ideal conditions for red wine production. The chalky soil and temperate climate, influenced by Lake Garda, provide the perfect environment for these native varieties to thrive.
After harvest, the grapes are dried for approximately four months, intensifying their aromas and flavors. The wine is then aged for at least 60 months in barriques, resulting in a deep ruby-red color and an intricate bouquet. Aromas of ripe red fruit, cherry, and plum intertwine with notes of licorice, soft spices, cocoa, and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is rich and enveloping, with velvety tannins and a long, well-integrated finish.
Color: Deep ruby-red
Aroma: Layers of licorice and cocoa complemented by ripe plums and cherries
Taste: Full-bodied, smooth, and complex, with firm yet polished tannins

Romano Dal Forno Winery represents a dynamic meeting point between time-honored winemaking methods and modern technological advances in Valpolicella. The winery builds on an ancient tradition of using semi-dried grapes, a practice that has defined the regionโs style for centuries, while incorporating innovative techniques that ensure each vintage is both robust and balanced. Romano Dal Forno began his career within his familyโs vineyard before choosing to produce wine directly from his own estate in the Illasi hills, where a climate influenced by Lake Garda and predominantly calcareous soils creates optimal conditions for the indigenous red grape varieties.
A significant turning point in his early career was his encounter with Giuseppe Quintarelli, a pivotal figure in Valpolicella winemaking. Under Quintarelliโs guidance, Dal Forno adopted advanced methods in yield management and grape selection. This relationship provided him with valuable insights into both traditional practices and the benefits of adopting new techniques, which he then applied to his own production. The interplay between Quintarelliโs conventional approach and Dal Fornoโs readiness to incorporate innovative processes has helped form a distinctive style of Amarone that continues to set high standards in the region.
At the winery, a strict selection process is employed to ensure that only the best grapes, subjected to a dual sorting procedure before and after the drying phase, are used in the vinification process. In addition, Dal Fornoโs use of smaller oak barrels allows for a faster and more controlled aging process compared to traditional large wooden barrels. This method not only refines the structure of the wine but also preserves the concentrated flavor derived from the grapes.
Over the years, the winery has embraced advancements such as improved air circulation during grape drying and precise temperature controls during fermentation. These technological improvements work in harmony with age-old techniques to ensure each wine maintains a consistent profile, rich fruit flavors, balanced tannins, and subtle spice notes that clearly express the character of Valpolicella.
Romano Dal Fornoโs innovative approach has had a lasting impact on the Amarone scene, influencing many producers in the region to reconsider established methods. Today, his winery stands as a model of how historical practices and modern technology can work together to produce wines that are both robust and refined, consistently representing the unique character of Valpolicella while pushing the limits of what Amarone can become.
