Vintage 2019
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.

Veronica and Alice oversee a hillside estate their family has tended for more than sixty years, applying a “zero‑centimetre” philosophy, every decision begins with the soil beneath their feet. Each bunch is clipped by hand; the best are laid in small crates on the loft’s open floor, where mountain air slowly dries the grapes for Amarone and Recioto.
The cellar itself is an old tuff quarry carved into rock. Its natural insulation keeps temperature and humidity steady, so fermentation can proceed cool and clean in stainless‑steel tanks, never above 20 °C. Gravity moves must and skins gently, preserving the grapes’ own aromas. After a brief rest in steel, wines mature in medium and large French oak for anywhere from one to ten years, gaining depth through slow micro‑oxygenation.
Above the quarry a green roof of vines crowns the structure, uniting vineyard and winery and reducing environmental impact. Guided by the example of their parents, Daniela and Tiziano, the sisters craft Valpolicella wines that honour local varieties, the limestone‑rich slopes, and a tradition of patience that begins long before harvest and ends only when a bottle is opened.
