An excellent year. Good weather all season and a perfect autumn for drying the grapes.
A large crop, of high quality where growers thinned the bunches, and an excellent drying season.
A rainy spring refilled the soils, and the summer went well; hail only grazed the area. Harvest came at the normal time, in dry weather with good night cooling, from 1 October for the drying grapes. The main issue was quantity: growers who cut bunches before veraison got high quality, and the first wines showed rich colour and body. Dry, breezy, cool weather during drying let some producers rest the grapes longer than usual, raising the sugar further.
Corvina Veronese IGT “Cresasso” 2004
Cresasso is a single-vineyard wine produced entirely from Corvina Veronese grapes grown in the highest plots of the Costalunga estate in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella, at around 300 to 350 metres above sea level on predominantly morainic limestone soils rich in stones and clay. Harvest takes place in two phases: the first pick occurs in late September, with those grapes then dried for approximately two months before fermentation, a process similar to Amarone production. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel for around 20 days, followed by ageing in French oak casks for 24 months, then a further period of bottle rest in the cellar. The 2004 is described as an intense, dark-fruited wine with notable spice character and the concentration typical of this site and method. The wine has the structure and depth expected of Cresasso to support extended cellaring.
