A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.
“Hestremo” Vino Rosso 2017
Hestremo is a Recioto della Valpolicella DOCG produced by Garbole, a small estate founded in 1994 by brothers Ettore and Filippo Finetto in Tregnago, in the Valle d’Illasi area of the province of Verona. The wine is made from a blend of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone and Rondinella with up to 15% other grapes, all harvested entirely by hand. After harvest, the grapes undergo a long drying period of approximately 120 to 150 days before a slow, gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for a minimum of 60 months in oak barrels before bottling. This 2017 is bottled in 375 ml half bottles and carries 12.5% alcohol by volume.
