A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
Lessini Durello DOC Metodo Classico Brut 2021
Le Guaite di Noemi produces this Metodo Classico from Durello grapes grown in the Fontana vineyard at Castelvero, in the province of Verona, at 650 to 700 metres above sea level on white limestone soils with red clay. The vines are trained in pergola at a density of 5,000 plants per hectare, and the grapes are harvested in late September. After a soft pressing and natural cold decantation, fermentation takes place with selected yeasts at controlled temperatures; the wine is then bottled in spring with fresh yeasts and refined cane sugar for the secondary fermentation. It ages on the lees for a minimum of 24 months in bottle, followed by riddling and disgorgement with zero dosage, resulting in a residual sugar of 2 g/l and total acidity of 8 g/l. The Durello grape, native to the Veneto, is known for its naturally high acidity, which gives the wine its mineral character and aging potential. The wine presents a straw yellow colour with greenish reflections and a fine, persistent perlage.
