A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore 2019
Villa della Torre’s Valpolicella Superiore is the estate’s everyday face, a red from the Classica hills around the Renaissance villa at Fumane, made within the group led by Marilisa Allegrini. The blend rests on the traditional varieties of the zone, Corvina first with Corvinone and Rondinella, as is usual for the appellation, and the Superiore designation brings a longer rest in the cellar than a simple Valpolicella.
It drinks bright and serious at once: ripe morello cherry and red plum, dried herbs, white pepper and a gently bitter close, medium weight with polished tannins. It is ready from the day of release and holds its shape for several years in a cool cellar. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, opened half an hour ahead, with bigoli with duck ragù, sopressa and grilled polenta, roast poultry or fegato alla veneziana; it earns its place on a Venetian dinner table.
Villa della Torre is one of the Veneto’s great Renaissance houses, built in the sixteenth century at Fumane to designs tied to Giulio Romano and Michele Sanmicheli and laid out like an ancient Roman domus. The Mastella Allegrini family has owned it since 2008, and since 2019 it has bottled wine under its own name within the group led by Marilisa Allegrini, working vineyards in the Valpolicella Classica and in Lugana. Today the villa is also a wine relais with ten rooms, but the cellar’s business remains classic Veronese reds from the hills around the house.
