An excellent year. A warm, early season and beautiful, healthy grapes.
One of the earliest seasons in years, with excellent grapes.
A very wet winter and a warm start brought early budbreak. A hot, very dry spring moved flowering about ten days ahead of the historical average. June and July were rainy, good for the growth of the bunches, and August was hot and dry. Picking started very early, from 5 September, almost without rain and with wide swings between day and night, ideal for ripening.
Corvina Veronese IGT “Cresasso” 2011
Cresasso is a single-varietal Corvina Veronese grown on the Costalunga estate in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella, at elevations of around 300 metres above sea level on predominantly morainic limestone soils rich in stones and clay. The name combines ‘cre’, from cretaceous, and ‘sasso’, the Italian word for stone, referencing the rocky terrain of the vineyard. Winemaking follows two distinct phases: a portion of the grapes is harvested in late September, dried for approximately two months, then fermented for around 20 days and aged in French oak casks for 24 months; the remaining grapes are left on the vine to over-ripen until late October, then fermented in stainless steel. The finished wine is a blend of these two batches, giving it concentration and complexity reminiscent of Amarone while retaining freshness from the later-harvested component. In the glass the 2011 shows a deep, dense ruby colour with purple hues, and the wine’s structure makes it well suited to extended cellaring.
