Description

Six Amaroni from hillside vineyards, selected for freshness and precision

All six wines in this box come from vineyards planted on the slopes of the Veronese hills, where cooler temperatures and well-drained soils allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The mineral character of limestone and marl-rich soils tends to give these Amaroni a lift and definition that sets them apart from wines grown on the valley floor.

The selection spans three vintages, 2011, 2018, and 2021, and brings together six producers: Cà dei Conti, Graziano Prà, Brigaldara, Accordini Stefano, Gini, and Ca’ Rugate. Between them they cover a range of styles within the high-altitude theme, from the structured and long-aged Riserva from Gini to the fresher, more recent releases from Accordini Stefano and Ca’ Rugate.

This is a good box for anyone curious about how altitude and soil shape Amarone, or for those who want a varied cellar selection from producers working across different corners of the Valpolicella hills.

Box contents

Cà dei Conti, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Tano”, 2018
From south-facing vineyards at 400 to 450 metres in Tregnago, planted in marl-limestone morainal soil. The wine is built on robust structure and alcohol richness, with a grape mix that includes Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Marzemino, and Rebo.

Graziano Prà, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Morandina”, 2018
From south-east facing slopes at 450 metres in the Mezzane and Tregnago areas, with calcareous soil contributing to a balance of power and freshness. The wine matures for two years in Allier tonneaux and barriques, then a further year in larger oak barrels before bottling.

Brigaldara, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Case Vecie”, 2018
Named after a vineyard in Grezzana, Valpantena, this is a true high-hill Amarone. The grapes ripen slowly at altitude, are harvested late, and dried during a colder part of the year, producing an extended drying process that draws out the natural characteristics of the high-altitude site.

Accordini Stefano, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Acinatico”, 2021
From the high hills of Valpolicella, with grapes handpicked in September and dried in a specialised fruit-room. The drying process includes the action of Botrytis Nobile, which partially converts sugars into glycerine, adding smoothness and body alongside a warm, spicy bouquet and raisin fruit character.

Gini, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Riserva “Scajari”, 2011
The oldest wine in the box, from mineral-laden soils in Campiano where vine roots reach deep into stone. Made from Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Oseleta, the wine offers dark cherry, blackberry, cocoa, liquorice, and tobacco aromas, with a dense, round texture and a balance between structure and acidity that carries well through long ageing.

Ca’ Rugate, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Punta 470”, 2021
The name points directly to the elevation of the site. A blend of 45% Corvina, 40% Corvinone, and 15% Rondinella, the wine shows concentrated aromas of ripe blueberries, blackberries, and cherries, with a full-bodied palate and a long, balanced finish.

Why this box?

If you want to compare how different producers work with hillside fruit across the vintages 2011, 2018, and 2021, this is a straightforward way to do it. The wines vary in style but share a common thread of structure and freshness. There is also one Riserva from 2011 for those who want to see how a high-altitude Amarone develops with age.
