Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
“Alice” Bianco Veneto IGP 2020 by Cà dei Conti
“Alice” Bianco Veneto IGP 2020 is a structured and distinctive white wine from Cantina Cà dei Conti – Artigiani del Vino. Produced from vines aged between 30 and 50 years, trained in Guyot on small natural terraces, it comes from a one hectare vineyard planted on calcareous marl soils of morainic origin, rich in minerals. With optimal sun exposure and low yields of about 1.5 kilograms per vine, the vineyard ensures fruit of notable concentration and character.
Harvest takes place at the end of October in 5 kilogram crates, with manual selection of perfectly ripened clusters for each variety. The grapes then undergo a three month drying period in the same crates inside a dedicated loft with controlled temperature, humidity and ventilation. Between January and February, the dried grapes are gently crushed and the free run juice is collected and transferred into stainless steel tanks for settling at 8 °C. The clear portion ferments at a controlled temperature of 14 °C for approximately 20 days.
After fermentation, the wine is separated from coarse lees and ages for two years in stainless steel tanks and American barriques, followed by at least six months in bottle.
The analytical profile shows 16 percent alcohol, total acidity of 8 g/L, residual sugars of 7 g/L, extract of 32 g/L and a pH of 3.2, highlighting both structure and freshness.
In the glass, it presents a refined rose gold hue. The nose reveals aromas of rose petals, grapefruit, almond, white pepper and aromatic herbs such as thyme and sage. On the palate it is fresh and intense, with a well balanced interplay between acidity and residual sweetness, offering depth and persistence.

Ca' dei Conti Winery – Valpolicella with Character
In the rolling hills of Tregnago, within the Val d’Illasi, the Ca' dei Conti winery carries forward a tradition rooted in respect for the land and the craftsmanship of winemaking. Established in 2006 by siblings Renzo and Loredana Rancan, the estate revives a long-standing legacy of viticulture with a focus on quality, sustainability, and authentic expression of the territory.
The vineyards are planted with both traditional and lesser-known native varieties, including Croatina and Oseleta, carefully cultivated to yield small but highly concentrated harvests. A strong commitment to organic and sustainable farming defines every stage of production, from vineyard management to winemaking techniques that highlight the character of the grapes while minimizing intervention.
A Focus on Sustainability and Craftsmanship
Ca' dei Conti follows a philosophy of precision and balance, ensuring that each wine reflects the nuances of its terroir. The estate practices dense vine planting, 9,000 vines per hectare, with low-yielding plants to enhance fruit quality. Grapes are hand-harvested and selected with care, followed by extended drying periods for wines requiring additional depth and complexity.
The winery is part of FIVI (Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers) and has earned recognition from Slow Wine for its dedication to sustainable viticulture. One of its standout wines, "TANO" Organic Amarone DOCG, embodies this approach, made from certified organic grapes that thrive in the mineral-rich limestone and marl soils of the estate.
The Role of Resistant Varieties (PIWI) in Sustainable Viticulture
Innovation plays a key role in the winery’s commitment to environmental responsibility. By cultivating resistant grape varieties (PIWI), Ca' dei Conti reduces the need for chemical treatments while maintaining high-quality production. These varieties, developed through centuries of careful crossbreeding, allow for minimal intervention, preserving biodiversity and ensuring the long-term health of the vineyards.
A Taste of Valpolicella
The Valpolicella DOC region extends beyond its well-known valleys, encompassing unique microclimates that influence the winery’s production. The estate’s high-altitude vineyards benefit from full southern exposure, allowing for excellent ripening conditions while maintaining freshness in the wines. The result is a collection of wines with refined structure, balanced acidity, and layers of complexity that showcase the potential of Valpolicella’s terroir.
At Ca’ dei Conti, every bottle tells the story of careful craftsmanship, sustainable choices, and the deep connection between the land and the people who cultivate it.
