After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Thano Rosso IGT Veronese 2019
Thano is produced by Le Guaite di Noemi on the estate vineyard in Mezzane di Sopra, in the hills east of Verona, at altitudes of 400 to 450 metres above sea level. The soils are calcareous and basaltic, giving the wine a pronounced mineral character alongside its fruit profile. Grapes are harvested in mid-September, then destemmed and cold-macerated before temperature-controlled fermentation with cultured yeasts and simultaneous malolactic conversion in stainless steel. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks for approximately 36 months, followed by a minimum of 36 months of bottle ageing before release. The blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella is the same used across the Valpolicella appellation, here vinified in a fresh, unapricot style without drying or oak.
