The winter was warm and dry; cold and rain returned from early April to mid May. July and August were cooler than average with frequent rain, and one hailstorm hit a small area high in the hills. Downy mildew was a challenge, above all around 10 June after four days of rain. September turned fine, with warmth and good ventilation keeping humidity low, and picking for the drying grapes began at the usual time. Fruit set was abundant in every variety.
“Santocciorosso” Rosso Veronese Igt by Montesantoccio
Santocciorosso is a deep and expressive red wine produced in Fumane, in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, by the family run winery Montesantoccio. The estate works with a hands on, small scale approach, focusing on careful vineyard work and patient cellar practices to shape wines with character and balance.
This wine blends Corvina and Corvinone with Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Corvina and Corvinone grapes are hand selected and dried in small crates until the end of December, while the remaining varieties are harvested and vinified fresh. Fermentation takes place in two stages, starting with a long premaceration followed by alcoholic fermentation, allowing depth and aromatic clarity to develop. The wine then rests in oak tonneaux, gaining structure and smoothness.
In the glass it shows an intense garnet red color. On the nose it is broad and layered, with ripe blackberry and cherry, followed by subtle spicy notes. On the palate it is warm and generous, with fresh, well integrated tannins and a long, savory finish. Alcohol is present but well balanced by fruit and structure.
Santocciorosso pairs naturally with risotti, pasta dishes with meat sauces, red meats, and aged cheeses. A versatile and confident red, suited both to the table and to quiet evenings with time to spare.

Nicola Ferrari is carrying forward a vision of winemaking where oversight of every step – from vine to cellar – ensures both quality and reputation. After spending years as cellarman under the legendary Bepi Quintarelli, Nicola established Monte Santoccio in Fumane, at the heart of Valpolicella Classica. Together with his wife Laura, he tends about three hectares of vineyards on the scenic Monte Santoccio hill, growing the region’s native varieties such as Corvina, Corvinone, Molinara, and Rondinella.
Each vintage relies exclusively on grapes from these estate vineyards, with annual production around 14,000 bottles. The wines, shaped by rigorous vineyard care and a focus on the land’s unique qualities, reflect an authentic expression of Valpolicella. Nicola’s meticulous approach stems from a deep knowledge of the local terroir – from soil studies and environmental conditions to carefully selecting vines and nurturing the most prized clusters. The result is a line of wines that celebrates both tradition and a clear, direct connection to this historic region.
