Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Warm weather, plenty of water and a balanced harvest.
A warm year with good water reserves, balanced ripening and a slightly early harvest.
Spring was cold at first, then warm, with repeated spells of cold air and a lot of rain in the hills. Early summer was cool and unstable; from late July it turned hot, with local storms. Strong storms in early September caused local damage, with landslides and flooding in some vineyards. Harvest began on 10 September, four days ahead of the average, with good sugar, balanced acidity and heavier berries thanks to plenty of water.
Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG “Vaio Armaron” 2018 โ Serego Alighieri by Masi
The Serego Alighieri estate has shaped the history of Amarone for centuries, and “Vaio Armaron” remains its most recognized expression. This Amarone carries the strength and refinement of Valpolicella, made with grapes from the historic Vaio Armaron vineyard, where vines have thrived for generations.
A blend of 65% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, and 15% Molinara (Serego Alighieri clone), this wine undergoes 120 days of drying in traditional fruit cellars before an extended 36-month aging in Slavonian oak and an additional four months in cherry-wood casksโa signature technique that adds roundness and depth.
Its deep ruby red color hints at the richness within. The aroma unfolds in layers, revealing ripe cherries, blueberries, and plums, alongside cinnamon, vanilla, and cocoa, with subtle balsamic undertones. The palate is full-bodied, warm, and structured, with silky tannins that balance the bold fruit flavors and a long, spicy finish.
With an aging potential of 25-30 years, this Amarone pairs perfectly with hearty risottos, truffle-accented dishes, aged cheeses, and premium meats like wagyu and buffalo. It also makes a refined after-dinner companion, complementing dark chocolate and spiced desserts.
More than a wine, “Vaio Armaron” represents the expertise of the Serego Alighieri family and its long-standing presence in Valpolicella, supported by Masiโs dedication to preserving traditional techniques while refining them for the modern era.

A Noble Lineage in Valpolicella
In the heart of Valpolicella Classica lies Possessioni Serego Alighieri, a venerable estate with roots extending back to 1353. This remarkable property, renowned even then for its exceptional vineyards, was acquired by Pietro Alighieri, son of Dante the Poet, who had accompanied his father to Verona during exile.
For over six centuries, spanning twenty-one generations, descendants of Dante have maintained this historical cornerstone of viticulture. The Masi Group supports the family in creating prestigious wines that honor an ancient and noble winemaking tradition.
A Living History
Possessioni Serego Alighieri holds the distinction of being Valpolicella's longest-standing wine estate, with more than 650 years of continuous cultural and viticultural significance. The heart of the property remains Casal dei Ronchi in Gargagnago, acquired by Pietro Alighieri in 1353.
When the Alighieri line faced succession through only female heirs in 1549, the family merged with the influential Imperial Serego family, giving rise to the combined Serego Alighieri name that endures today.
The 16th century saw Marcantonio Serego champion agricultural innovation, land recovery, and productivity improvements across the estate. By the 18th century, cultivation had evolved into both science and art, with careful matching of crops to their ideal habitats. Following the phylloxera crisis of the early 20th century, Pieralvise Serego Alighieri established the School of Agriculture in Gargagnago, focusing on restoring native grape varieties.
In 1973, the estate joined the Masi Group portfolio while maintaining its historical identity. Today, visitors can explore the grounds and connect with the rich history and spirit of Valpolicella.
The Historic Courtyard
Laid with characteristic Prun stone, the spacious courtyard once served agricultural functions. Eleven ancient vines, planted in 1875 to mark Count Pieralvise's birth, stand as rare survivors of the phylloxera epidemic. These vines yield the unique Serego Alighieri clone of Molinara grapes, which give the estate's wines their distinctive character.
Traditional Appassimento
The historic drying loft overlooks the courtyard, housing the "arele" (bamboo racks) central to the Appassimento process, a traditional Venetian method that concentrates aromas and flavors. Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes rest here for at least 100 days before becoming the celebrated wines of the region: Amarone and Recioto.
The estate produces two outstanding cru wines: Vaio Armaron Amarone, recognized by Wine Spectator as among the world's ten finest wines, and Casal Dei Ronchi Recioto. Their MontePiazzo Valpolicella Classico Superiore, from its namesake vineyard, also utilizes this ancient technique.
Unique Cellaring
The oldest cellars in Valpolicella house wines of unmistakable character and nobility. Following ancestral Serego Alighieri methods, 600-liter cherry wood barrels impart surprising aromatic qualities, enhancing smoothness and roundness while accentuating the typical notes of Valpolicella grapes.
Oak barrels are used for initial aging, as the highly porous cherry wood can only be used for up to four months to bestow its unique personality on these extraordinary wines.
