Vintage 2022
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A hot, dry year. Drought tested the vines, but rain in August helped them recover.
Hot, dry and early: the year of drought, managed through careful work on water.
From January to July only 190 mm of rain fell against an average of 450, a deficit of 60%, and May to July were hot. Young vines and vines on light soils suffered water stress, but rain in August helped most of them recover. Veraison came in late July, about two weeks early, and picking began around 5 September. Disease pressure stayed low; local hail fell in August and September.
Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore “Pa’ Riondo”
The Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore “Pa’ Riondo” by Brunelli is a beautifully crafted wine, blending 65% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella, and 10% Corvinone grapes. These vines, averaging 35 years in age, are grown on the stony, limestone-rich soils of San Pietro in Cariano and Pedemonte in Valpolicella.
This wine is produced using the traditional ripasso method, where the selected Valpolicella is re-fermented on the pomace of freshly pressed Amarone grapes. This second fermentation enriches the wine with additional color, structure, and aromas, while boosting its alcohol content and aging potential. After 15 months of aging in oak barriques and tonneaux, “Pa’ Riondo” develops a remarkable balance and structure, with a further 6 months of bottle aging to refine its character.
In the glass, this wine reveals a deep ruby red hue. The nose offers an enticing bouquet of black currant, blackberry, and fresh plum, with delicate hints of vanilla. On the palate, it is enveloping and full-bodied, with a persistent finish that showcases its rich, harmonious structure.
Perfect for pairing with elaborate pasta dishes, red meats, game, grilled chops, roasts, and medium-aged cheeses. “Pa’ Riondo” carries the legacy of the Brunelli family, who have been crafting wines in Valpolicella since the 18th century. With a history rooted in tradition and a commitment to innovation, the Brunelli family ensures that each glass of “Pa’ Riondo” reflects the quality and passion of their winemaking.

The Brunelli family has been rooted in San Pietro in Cariano, in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, since the 18th century. This region is positioned between Verona and Lake Garda, where mineral-rich limestone soils, mild breezes, and indigenous grape varieties come together under an ideal south-southwest exposure. The traditional process of appassimento, enhancing sugar and extract concentration, has deep ties to this land.
Today, the winery is guided by Alberto Brunelli and his parents, Luciana and Luigi. Their approach unites expertise with a personal vision for wines that reflect the nature of their makers. Amarone Riserva Campo del Titari, with its unapologetic strength, brings to mind Luigi’s resolute personality, while Amarone Riserva Campo Inferi conveys gentler shades, echoing Luciana’s graceful style.
From an early age, Alberto observed the cycle of the seasons, the aromas of vineyards, and the evolution of grapes into wine. He recognized that every cuvée carries distinct traits, sometimes evoking family members. Valpolicella’s primary varieties, Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Oseleta, thrive here, including revived native grapes. Double Low Pergola and Espalier training methods link modern techniques with generations of knowledge.
The family’s aim is to highlight the character of local grapes through flavours and fragrances that set their wines apart. With an emphasis on nature’s pace, thoughtful practices in the vineyard, and close attention to quality, Brunelli wines offer a genuine taste of Valpolicella’s identity, rooted in passion and tradition.
