Twelve Amarones from ten producers, three harvests, one great price
This box brings together twelve bottles of Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG from ten different producers, covering vintages from 2018 to 2021. It is a good way to see how different families and estates approach the same wine, and how the same appellation can yield quite different results depending on the year and the hand behind it.
The producers here are a mix of family estates and established names from across Valpolicella: Tenuta Sant’Antonio, Le Bignele, Benedetti La Villa, Domini Veneti, Brigaldara, Giovanni Dindo, La Collina dei Ciliegi, Télos, Accordini Stefano, and Monte Santoccio. Some work in the Classica heartland, others across the broader denomination. What they share is a thorough use of the appassimento method, drying harvested grapes for weeks or months before fermentation, which is what gives Amarone its weight, depth, and concentration.
The three vintages present, 2018, 2020, and 2021, each have their own character. Tasting across them alongside wines from different producers gives a clearer picture of Amarone than any single bottle can offer.
Box contents
Tenuta Sant’Antonio, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Antonio Castagnedi”, 2021
Made in honour of their father Antonio by four brothers, this wine is built from Corvina, Rondinella, Croatina, and Oseleta from the Monti Garbi vineyards. It aged for two years in new 500-litre French oak tonneux, and opens with a balsamic bouquet with hints of violets.
Le Bignele, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico, 2020
A deep ruby wine with aromas that move from cherry spirit through to spice as it opens up. On the palate it is bold and persistent, yet described as enveloping as silk, with a balance of strength and elegance.
Benedetti La Villa, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Vigneto La Permuta”, 2020
Produced from a single vineyard in Negrar, with Corvina, Rondinella, and a small amount of Molinara dried in well-ventilated lofts for several months. The must and pomace ferment slowly in stainless steel for around forty days, allowing for gentle extraction of colour and structure.
Domini Veneti, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico, 2021
A balanced expression of the 2021 vintage, with Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone, and other varieties fermented in stainless steel and aged eighteen months in barrel. Deep ruby-garnet in colour, with dense sweet berry fruit, liquorice, cocoa, and coffee on the nose, and a full, concentrated palate.
Domini Veneti, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Or’Jago”, 2018
From the hamlet of Jago in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, built from 60% Corvina, 15% Corvinone, 15% Rondinella, and 10% other indigenous varieties. The oldest wine in the box, from the 2018 harvest, offering the chance to see how a little extra bottle age settles into this style.
Brigaldara, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Cavolo”, 2020
Only the sparsest, best-exposed bunches are selected and dried for around 120 days. The wine then aged in wooden barrels for at least four years, two in small barrels and two in large, building considerable structure and complexity.
Domini Veneti, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Collezione Pruviniano”, 2021
Named after the ancient identity of the Marano Valley, known until the 12th century as Pruviniano, this wine comes from vineyards in Prognol on soils of silt, clay, and limestone. It carries a traditional and authentic style, with Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella at its core.
Giovanni Dindo, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico, 2020
Produced only in outstanding vintages, this wine is made from Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara, dried on wooden trays for about four months with each grape losing around 40% of its weight. Maceration runs for 30 to 40 days at a controlled 18°C, ensuring slow and gentle extraction.
La Collina dei Ciliegi, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, 2020
Grapes are laid in drying lofts for around 100 days, reducing in weight by nearly 40%, then fermented slowly over 25 days before 24 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux. The result is a dark garnet wine with morello cherry, fruit preserves, warm spices, and a whisper of leather.
Télos, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, 2020
Made without added sulfites by the Castagnedi family, this wine shows ripe red fruit, cherry, currant, and blueberry, with floral notes, pepper, clove, and licorice, plus a mineral thread of graphite. Ageing in French oak tonneaux brings in cocoa, vanilla, and coffee.
Accordini Stefano, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Acinatico”, 2021
From the high hills of Valpolicella, this wine is noted for its significant structure, elegant complexity, and warm, spicy bouquet with raisin fruit flavours. During drying, the action of Botrytis Nobile partially converts sugars into glycerine, adding smoothness and body.
Monte Santoccio, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico, 2020
From Fumane in the Valpolicella Classica area, this wine blends Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara, reaching 16% alcohol. Fermentation runs in two phases, a 20-day cold pre-maceration followed by a 30-day alcoholic fermentation, before extended ageing.
Why this box?
Ten producers across three vintages gives you a genuine cross-section of Amarone as it is being made today. The price per bottle works out well below what you would pay buying each wine individually, and the range of styles, from the leaner, more classic approach of some estates to the richer, more fruit-driven expressions of others, makes this a box that rewards opening one at a time and comparing notes.
