Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG by Famiglia Pasqua
The Famiglia Pasqua wines are the top selections of Pasqua Vigneti e Cantine, a Verona house whose roots run deep in the Veneto. This range gathers the great Veronese and Venetian classics, and this Amarone comes from the Valpantena, one of the valleys that fan out across the Valpolicella, known for its fresh, well-drained sites.
The grapes, a blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone, are picked by hand in mid-September and laid to dry in the fruttaio for around three months, during which the bunches lose roughly 25 to 30% of their weight and concentrate everything inside the berry. After pressing, alcoholic fermentation runs in steel for about 25 to 30 days at controlled temperature, with frequent punch-downs to draw out colour and tannin. The wine then moves into new French oak barriques, where malolactic fermentation softens it. After 18 to 20 months of maturation it is bottled for a further four months of refinement.
The colour is a deep, intense red. The nose is broad, with fresh, clear aromas of red fruit such as blueberry and cherry, spiced tones of cocoa and tobacco, and sweet hints of vanilla. On the palate it is velvety and enveloping, with silky tannins and a sour-cherry aftertaste. The finish is long and persistent.
Serve at 18°C alongside red meats, braised dishes and mature cheeses, or on its own as a meditation wine.
Why a magnum
A 1.5 litre bottle holds the equivalent of two standard bottles. The larger volume ages more slowly against the same amount of oxygen, so the wine keeps its fruit and its freshness longer and rewards time in the cellar. It is also the right format for a table of six or more. For shipping, one magnum counts as two bottles.

Pasqua Vigneti e Cantine is a historic Veronese winery owned by the Pasqua family. Founded in 1925, it is recognised around the world as both a producer and ambassador of prestigious Venetian wines. What the first generation of Pasqua brothers started has grown over a century into a house that pairs a deep understanding of the Valpolicella terroir with a constant push toward new winemaking ideas, carrying forward a hundred years of expertise through renewed stylistic codes.
Today President Umberto Pasqua works alongside his sons: Riccardo Pasqua as Chief Executive Officer, Alessandro Pasqua as President of Pasqua USA, and Andrea Pasqua as Head of Business Development. This third generation gave the winery its guiding manifesto, House of the Unconventional, a statement of identity built on boldness, a drive for experimentation, and curiosity about the world. Those values steer every strategic and production decision, with the wines acting as ambassadors of a dialogue between territory and creative vision, where the identity of a place meets human ingenuity to give wines that hold strong roots together with an international outlook.
The family thinks of its bottles as an ensemble of time made of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Each one holds knowledge passed down from generation to generation alongside the aim of producing wines built to withstand time, maturing and evolving in the glass. Art is a steady source of inspiration: Pasqua has long worked with artists worldwide, grounded in the belief that innovation is born from a profound, appreciative knowledge of history and tradition. Sustainability runs through the business too, from highly optimised energy use and temperature regulating structures to reduced packaging waste, supported by quality certifications including ISO, BRC, IFS and Biological, plus conformity to the Equalitas SOPD standard.
That research-minded approach has been noticed: Pasqua was named Innovator of the Year 2023 by Wine Enthusiast. In 2025 the winery celebrated its first 100 years, was chosen by winemaker Charles Smith as global distributor of the House of Smith brands (K Vintners, Sex and Real Wine), of which it is also a minority partner, and invested in the Pantelleria winemaking project of actress and style icon Carole Bouquet, acquiring ownership and linking its winemaking vision to the preservation of the island's culture.
As the family sees it, the wines they make are the fruit of their land's generosity and human talent.
