Archaeologists found an extensive Roman villa from the third century under the vineyards of Benedetti La Villa in Negrar di Valpolicella, with mosaic floors across a large residential and working complex. It is direct evidence that wine was being made on these slopes almost two thousand years ago.

Amarone 101: everything you wanted to know

The short answers: Amarone is a place, not a grape. It is dry, not sweet, despite tasting of dried fruit. It is not fortified, the alcohol comes from drying the grapes. The name means the big bitter one. Everything below is the long version, question by question.

Every Detail Counts: The “Italesse” Glass Designed for Amarone

Italesse built the T-Made 76 AV specifically for Amarone after two years of work and hundreds of tastings. The bowl is wide enough to let 16% alcohol blow off and tall enough to hold the dried fruit aromatics above it. We pour every Amarone tasting in Venice from it.

Amarone Bertani 2015 – James Suckling’s Wine of the Year 2024

James Suckling named Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2015 his Wine of the Year for 2024, scoring it 100 points. Bertani has made Amarone since 1857, ages it in large Slavonian oak and releases it many years late. The 2015 was one of the two best vintages of the century.

Giuseppe Quintarelli

Giuseppe Quintarelli is the benchmark of traditional Amarone. Long drying, wild yeast, years in large Slavonian casks, released when the wine is ready rather than when the law allows, with handwritten labels. He died in 2012 and the estate continues in the same way under his family.

The best Amarone of 2023? We consult the critics

The critics who matter for Amarone are Gambero Rosso with its Tre Bicchieri, Bibenda with its 5 Grappoli, James Suckling, Wine Spectator and Decanter. They rarely agree. This gathers what each of them rated highest in 2023 and says where the overlap is.

Wine, Food, Science and Valpolicella – In Depth

Wine and food work together through acidity, tannin, fat, salt and sugar. Acidity cuts fat, tannin binds to protein, sweetness must outrun the dish or it tastes sour. This applies that to the Valpolicella wines and explains why Amarone wants braised meat and aged cheese.

Incredibly helpful and generous staff. Had half an hour due to work obligations and wanted to enjoy some Amarone. Lady behind the counter engaged me with no snobbery or disdain for my acknowledgement of looking for accessible wines. Will visit again...if I get the chance!

I stopped in here with very little Italian wine knowledge. I left with a great experience, lots of helpful information, and a souvenir to bring home. There is a wine tasting room and a bottle shop. I did a tasting and then bought a bottle of my favorite to take home. Great spot, staff was super engaging and helpful. Thanks!

A grand wine store who ships internationally at a reasonable price. A great selection of wine with an emphasis on the Amarone varietal. They have a very nicely selected wine tasting in the attached restaurant. Highly recommended wine tasting and the food also is worth a trip back for dinner. Will be returning here in the future for sure and will be shopping in their online store in the meantime.

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of visiting Vineria all'Amarone, an exquisite wine shop that truly stands out in in Venice. From the moment we arrived, the owner (Johann) welcomed us with genuine warmth and enthusiasm that instantly made us feel at home. His passion for wine is palpable, and he generously offered us a complimentary tasting of some of his finest selections.

The experience was enhanced by his insightful comments about each wine and the unique characteristics they exhibit. It's clear that he deeply understands and appreciates the art of winemaking, and he took the time to share stories behind each bottle, adding a personal touch to our visit.

The ambiance of the shop is simply beautiful, with carefully curated displays showcasing an impressive array of wines sourced from the best regions. The atmosphere is inviting, making it a perfect place to explore and discover new favorites.

Vineria all'Amarone is not just a wine shop; it's a heartfelt experience that celebrates the love of wine. I left with not only a few exquisite bottles but also a newfound appreciation for the artistry behind them. Highly recommended for anyone looking to indulge in quality wines and enjoy remarkable hospitality!

Are customs duties included?

Within the European Union: no customs duties at all.

To the United States: customs duties on our wine shipments, including the current 15% tariff, are paid by All’Amarone.

Everywhere else outside the European Union: local customs duties and taxes may apply and are paid by the recipient.

Import rules change. Please check the current rules for your country before you order.

How long does delivery take?

Counting working days, from the day the parcel leaves Venice:

  • Italy: 3 working days.
  • Europe: 10 to 12 working days.
  • United States: about 21 working days.
  • Other international destinations: about 14 working days, plus local customs.

These are estimates, not guaranteed dates. Weekends, public holidays, customs and exceptional transport conditions all move them.

How are the wines protected during shipping?

Every parcel leaves Venice in certified isothermal packaging and travels under temperature controlled transport.

Every order is packed and checked by our own team before it goes.

Every shipment is insured in full, and we pay for that insurance.

We hold parcels back during extreme heat or frost to protect the wine, and we tell you when we do.

Is payment secure and which payment methods do you accept?

Yes. Payment is processed by Stripe over an encrypted SSL/TLS connection. Stripe handles your card details; we never see them.

We accept major debit and credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna and Link, where your device and country support them.

The methods available to you are shown at checkout.
