Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.
Amarone della Valpolicella Docg Classico “Centenarie” 2017 by Tenuta Villa Bellini
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Centenarie” by Tenuta Villa Bellini is an exceptionally elegant, deeply expressive Amarone that beautifully captures the character of its organically grown grapes. A carefully selected blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone, and other traditional varieties undergoes a meticulous 90-day drying process, concentrating the grapes’ natural aromas and richness.
Spontaneous fermentation takes place in tapered 26 hl wooden vats, after which the wine matures gently for 30 months in French oak barrels of various sizes. This refined Amarone then spends an additional year aging in the bottle, gaining complexity and balance before its release.
Centenarie offers a layered aromatic profile, shifting gracefully with each sip, revealing hints of ripe red fruit, spices, and subtle balsamic notes. On the palate, it is balanced, intense, and yet remarkably agile, finishing dry, clean, and lingering—a wine of impressive depth and elegance, capable of aging gracefully for more than two decades.
Ideal pairings include rich, hearty dishes like stewed or braised meats, game birds, or robust, mature cheeses. Centenarie is equally rewarding on its own, enjoyed slowly as a contemplative sipping wine. Serve at 16-18°C to fully appreciate its complexity.
Produced exclusively from grapes grown within Villa Bellini’s terraced estate at Castelrotto, the wine benefits from a unique terroir composed of diverse soils rich in limestone and influenced by underground springs. The vineyards are cultivated with a mixed training system, including Trentino Pergola and modified Guyot, with vine ages ranging from 20 to over 100 years, creating a wine authentically tied to its land and tradition.

Tenuta Villa Bellini stands on a lush hillside of Castelrotto, in San Pietro in Cariano, Valpolicella Classica. The estate, dating back to the 18th century, is surrounded by ancient cypress trees, chestnuts, traditional dry stone "marogne," and features a hidden spring within a cave, along with a tranquil pond that gently merges into surrounding woodlands.
The vineyards span four hectares, forming a carefully preserved "brolo," or walled garden, on terraced slopes facing east and southeast at an elevation of 150 meters. Richly diverse soils, abundant in limestone and underground springs, provide depth and distinctive aromas to the organically grown native grape varieties: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara, along with selected ancient Veronese vines.
Organic cultivation here is a conscious choice rooted in respect for biodiversity. Vineyard management prioritizes green manure, selective mowing to sustain pollinator populations, and precise, minimal organic treatments tailored to individual vineyard needs. Vine-training methods include traditional pergolas and high-density vertical espaliers, nurturing vines aged from 20 to over 100 years.
At Tenuta Villa Bellini, grapes are harvested and selected entirely by hand, with spontaneous fermentation and microvinification techniques emphasizing minimal intervention. Each vintage naturally expresses the authentic personality of the terroir.
The philosophy at Villa Bellini is clear and sincere: return the earth’s gifts in their purest form, letting each wine speak genuinely of its unique place of origin.
