Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico 1987 by Bertani

The 1987 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico by Bertani comes from a challenging and irregular growing season, yet one that ultimately delivered a solid result for Amarone production. The start of the season was uncertain, with significant rainfall, particularly in July, and lower than average temperatures marked by frequent fluctuations. Despite these conditions, the harvest proved to be good for Amarone, even if more moderate for other Valpolicella wines.

Following Bertani’s traditional approach, the wine underwent extended aging before being bottled in October 1996, highlighting the estate’s focus on long maturation and stability.

In the glass, it shows an intense ruby red color with garnet reflections. The nose is rich and persistent, offering a complex bouquet of dried fruit, with clear notes of sour cherry and plum.

On the palate, the wine is full and harmonious, with soft, well-rounded tannins supported by a lively acidity that keeps the structure balanced. The finish is long and expressive, with lingering notes of almond pastry and spices, closing with notable elegance.

This vintage stands out for its harmony and finesse, showing how Bertani’s style can bring balance and clarity even in more demanding years.

About Bertani

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.

One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.

Bertani’s overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.

With vineyards in sought-after districts of Valpolicella, Soave, and beyond, the winery has developed a range that highlights the distinction of each zone. Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties. Through measured innovation and an enduring regard for tradition, Bertani holds a significant place in the Italian wine landscape.
