Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year, one of the best of its decade. A hot summer and a small harvest of top grapes.
One of the best years of the decade: a smaller crop of excellent quality.
A cold autumn and winter with plenty of rain refilled the soils. Budbreak came about 7 days earlier than in 2008, and flowering very early. Heavy rain and some hail in early July did no real damage. August was torrid, comparable only to 2003. September brought wide swings between day and night and very little rain, ideal for picking, which began on 9 September.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Ca’ Florian” by Tommasi
Tommasi’s cornerstone, made from old vines on a single vineyard that has belonged to the company for over a century. This is crème de la crème stuff, a deep, profound wine of absolutely indisputable quality.
Winemaking: all-manual harvest followed by meticulous selection. A very long period of appassimento, over three months, in a fruttaio with traditional arele (bamboo drying racks), followed by very gentle pressing and a month-long fermentation in oak using native yeasts. Ageing is conducted first in small French oak barrels (one year) then larger Slavonian botti (three years), before being held back at least twelve months in bottle prior to release.
Assemblage: corvina 75%, corvinone 20%, rondinella 5%.
Soil: unique morainic combination of calcareous and red clay.
Alcohol: 15.5%.
Colour: profound and definite redness, even brick at the rim.
Aroma: generally tending to the bitter and ethereal, with Maraschino cherries combining with aniseed and chocolate notes, not to mention cigar box and a distinct, musky woodiness.
Palate: an ‘old-school’ wine in the best sense. Some of the austerity of a left-bank Bordeaux, with a certain aristocratic elegance which belies its substantial fruit character and power, aided by very structuring tannins and a bright, balancing acidity.
Ageability: decades. Plural. Seriously, will substantially reward patience and care in the cellar.
Pairing: requires extreme savoury-umami elements to stand up to this one. Perhaps though, ultimately, very good after-dinner cheese and mindfulness is where this wine shines at the fullest.

Tommasi Family Estates began in 1902, when Giacomo Tommasi purchased a small vineyard in Valpolicella Classica. Over four generations, that modest holding developed into a leading winery, most famously marked by the release of its first Amarone Classico in 1959. Today, the Tommasi name stands behind 242 hectares of vineyards in Verona’s historic denominations, where local grapes thrive under careful methods that merge tradition and modern ideas.
The winery’s core, Tommasi Viticoltori, remains at its original home in Valpolicella, managed by nine great-grandchildren of the founder. Natural appassimento, slow grape drying, forms a key part of the approach, shaping the signature style of their red wines. In 2010, the family completed a dedicated Amarone aging cellar, featuring the colossal Magnifica oak cask with a capacity of 33,000 litres.
Beyond Valpolicella, further initiatives include Casisano in Montalcino, Paternoster in Vulture, Caseo in Oltrepò Pavese, Poggio al Tufo in Maremma Toscana, Surani in Manduria, and Ammura on Mount Etna. Each site was selected for its distinctive soil and climate, allowing the Tommasi family to craft wines of place while maintaining a hallmark style.
At the winery, attention centres on every step of the process, from vineyard management to cellar work. Large Slavonian oak barrels, combined with measured time for maturation, preserve fruit-forward and floral profiles in each bottle. The original 1902 casks remain in the historic cellar, a reminder of the family’s modest beginnings and continued devotion to quality across all their wines.
