Amarone della Valpolicella DOP Classico 2015 by Quintarelli
A legendary vintage from a legendary producer. Quintarelli are one of the most renowned, celebrated, and indeed collectible winemakers in the region, an extraordinary legacy of winemaking care and expertise, and a reputation for excellence earned and reinforced with every release. Combine that with a vintage judged by many to be the greatest in the region’s recent history, and you have a result of true sublimity, a many-layered wonder that will grow and deepen as the years and decades pass.
Winemaking: The extremely carefully-selected grapes are arranged precisely in the fruttaio to ensure maximum evenness and development of appassimento, as well as to encourage the botrytis that concentrates the sugar even further (usually kicking-in at the end of November). At the end of January the grapes are crushed and macerated for around 20 days before fermentation with native yeasts, which itself takes a long 45 days. The wine is then aged in Slavonian oak barrels for a full 7 years, a slow transformation into this extraordinarily complex final product.
Assemblage: Corvina and corvinone 55%, rondinella 30%, cabernet, nebbiolo, croatina and sangiovese 15%.
Soil: Mostly calcareous and basaltic soils
Alcohol: 16,5%
Colour: Rather deep red-garnet.
Aroma: Incredibly intense but nonetheless delicate, with powerful fruit balanced by a subtle bitterness, reminiscent of almonds.
Palate: Beautifully balanced, power with finesse, full-bodied as they come but nonetheless balanced by an impressive refreshing acidity. Fruits, spices, herbs, hints of smoke and the promise of something really extraordinary.
Ageability: We’re talking decades, easily. This is an extremely high-level, serious wine, one which will be looked back on in the future as a legend.
