Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A rainy spring, then a hot, sunny summer.
A cold, rainy spring and then a hot summer; careful vineyard work gave excellent results.
March and the spring were wet and cool: May alone had 18 rainy days and 229 mm, delaying flowering by about ten days. July and August were fine and hot. Hail struck the Classico zone on 24 August. From late August through September, wide swings between day and night built rich colour and tannin, and picking began at the usual time, from 20 September, with only scattered rain.

The name “Tre Terre” pays homage to the origins of the grapes used in this new masterpiece from the Quintarelli family. These grapes hail from the prestigious communes of Negrar, Marano, and Sant’Ambrogio, each contributing its unique terroir to the blend. Notably, a higher proportion of grapes from the “Conca d’Oro” vineyard in Sant’Ambrogio, known for its altitude, exposure, and vine age, contributes to the wine’s enhanced dryness and tannin structure.
What sets the “Tre Terre” apart is its distinctive style, characterized by pronounced tannins, enticing spiciness, and a lively acidity. This Amarone stands apart from the traditional Quintarelli range, showcasing vibrant notes of red cherries and aromatic herbs. Notably, it boasts an unexpected mineral quality and objectivity that sets it apart from other Amarones, making it reminiscent of a noble Barolo in its elegance.
This idiosyncratic interpretation of Amarone is a true class of its own. With its captivating complexities and unique character, the “Tre Terre” Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2013 by Giuseppe Quintarelli is a testament to the Quintarelli legacy and a rare find for wine connoisseurs. Don’t miss the chance to savor this extraordinary expression of Italian winemaking.

Quintarelli Winery lies in the Valpolicella area, north of Verona. Known for producing Amarone, Recioto, Valpolicella, and other traditional labels, it is associated with Giuseppe “Bepi” Quintarelli, who began focusing on premium bottled wines in the 1960s. The family’s approach remains discreet: the property in Negrar has no prominent signs, and there is no official website. This modest style protects the calm atmosphere that has guided their work for generations.
The vineyards span multiple zones, including Valgatara, Sant’Ambrogio, and Montorio. Here, soils vary from gravelly alluvial deposits to limestone-rich layers and, in some spots, volcanic rock. The main grape varieties are Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, joined by Croatina, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, and both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The winery also makes a white blend using Garganega, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Trebbiano.
Appassimento, a longstanding approach in Valpolicella, plays a key role. Grapes, often picked slightly earlier to preserve acidity, dry on straw mats or racks for several weeks to months. This controlled dehydration boosts sugar concentration and flavours. If the dried grapes ferment fully, Amarone is produced, while stopping fermentation earlier yields the sweet Recioto style.
After appassimento, the family relies on slow fermentations and extended aging in large wooden casks. This measured process highlights depth and structure, reflecting decades of practical knowledge. Only the best grapes become Amarone Classico and, in exceptional seasons, Amarone Riserva. Each vintage reflects the steady methods passed down in the family. Today, Bepi’s daughter Fiorenza leads the estate, carrying on the quiet traditions that give Quintarelli wines their recognizable character.
