Vintage 2017
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.
Valpolicella Superiore DOC “Galante” 2017 by Trabucchi d’Illasi
The Valpolicella Superiore “Galante” 2017 by Trabucchi d’Illasi is a refined and structured expression of Valpolicella, combining freshness with depth through a carefully managed partial appassimento.
Produced from Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella grown in the hills of Illasi at around 220 meters above sea level, the grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a short drying period of 10 to 15 days, losing about 10 to 15% of their weight. This step concentrates aromas and structure while preserving balance and drinkability.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at controlled temperatures for about two to three weeks, followed by aging for 12 months in French oak barrels. This process gives the wine both clarity and subtle complexity without overpowering its natural fruit profile.
In the glass, it shows a deep and bright ruby red color. The nose is rich and layered, with ripe red fruit at the forefront, followed by more refined notes of flowers and minerality, along with hints of graphite, cocoa, dried plum, black pepper, and licorice.
On the palate, the wine is vibrant and well-structured, with a juicy core of fruit supported by fresh acidity and fine, integrated tannins. The texture is smooth yet energetic, leading to a long, clean and aromatic finish.
This is a Valpolicella Superiore that balances approachability with complexity, offering both immediate pleasure and the ability to evolve over time.
