Valpolicella Superiore DOC Classico “Sant’Urbano” by Speri
Speri’s Valpolicella Classico Superiore “Sant’Urbano” is a red wine from Veneto, fruity and of good intensity, produced in the magnificent hilly area north-west of Verona. It is a typical wine from Valpolicella, both for the choice of grape varieties and for the winemaking process. It is produced with native red grape varieties historically grown in Valpolicella Classica, mainly Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara, with a slight drying of the grapes. Aging in wood allows the wine to evolve towards notes of good complexity and expressive maturity, which make it a red with good structure and persistence on the palate.
The “Sant’Urbano” is a Valpolicella Classico Superiore that is born in one of the symbolic cellars of the territory. Founded in the mid-nineteenth century, the Speri estate is located in Pedemonte di San Pietro in Cariano, in the beating heart of Valpolicella and manages a heritage of about 60 hectares of owned vineyards. This particular interpretation of Valpolicella Classico, stands out for its richness and intensity, approaching the older brothers Ripasso and Amarone, rather than the young and flowing red traditionally produced in the territory. The grapes of Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, Molinara and other ancient indigenous red berried varieties come from pergola vines grown in Monte Sant’Urbano, on lands of ancient volcanic origin. A real company cru that has always provided clusters with a rich and elegant aromatic outfit.
The “Sant’Urbano” Valpolicella wine, produced by the historic Speri winery, is a red that comes from a process of drying the best grapes for a period of about three weeks. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. After the malolactic fermentation in cement, the wine matures for 18 months in Allier oak tonneau. In the glass it has a rather intense ruby red color. The bouquet offers ripe aromas of red fruit, notes of black cherry, berry jam and soft spices. The sip is rich, ample, enveloping and stretches towards a harmonious and delicately spiced finish.
