Vintage 2020
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico by Nicolis
An Amarone Classico of real depth, elegance and ageing potential.
Winemaking: Nicolis utilise a specialist โfruttaioโ room for drying the grapes. After the wine is fermented (with all-natural yeasts) the wine is aged in traditional Slavonian botti for 30 months, and held back in bottle for 6 months prior to release.
Soil: calcareous and deposits of moraine debris.
Assemblage: corvina 65%, rondinella 20%, croatina 10%, molinara 5%.
Alcohol: 15%
Colour: dusky purple, russet tinges.
Aroma: deep forest fruits, raspberry coulis, fresh bay leaves, fresh leather, autumn leaves, aged balsamic vinegar, white and black pepper, unpeeled almonds and more (real complexity here!).
Palate: beautifully harmonious fruit and tannins, powerful but not imbalanced, fresh acidity without jarring the teeth, with a pronounced cloves and cinnamon spice profile and hints of baked apples at the end.
Ageability: this one has everything you need to keep for a good long while. 15 years for sure, maybe even 20.
Pairing: perfect for very rich food, stews and the like (beef and venison, but also dark mushrooms), without too much chilli to overwhelm the elegant elements. Would also be wonderful on its own, just to sip slowly all evening.

Nicolis Winery cultivates 49 hectares of estate vineyards in San Pietro in Cariano, right at the center of Valpolicella Classica. Since 1951, when Angelo Nicolis and his wife Natalia began bottling for the market rather than only family use, the estate has passed from Angelo to his son Giuseppe and now to grandchildren Angelo and Sofia, who farm with an eye to soil health and lowโimpact methods.
Valpolicella Classica itself stretches like an open hand: five โfingersโ form the parallel valleys of Fumane, Marano, SantโAmbrogio, Negrar, and San Pietro in Cariano. Cool currents slide down from the Lessini Mountains while warmer breezes rise from Lake Garda, weaving together ideal microclimates on both foothill and hillside sites. Limestone and marl give Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara their bright acidity and subtle mineral tones, the foundation of every Nicolis wine.
After careful hand selection, grapes for Valpolicella are deโstemmed, gently crushed, and fermented in temperatureโcontrolled steel to preserve primary aromas. Bunches intended for Amarone and Recioto rest on open trays for about three months, losing moisture and concentrating sugars in the traditional appassimento. Pressing and a slow winter fermentation follow; Amarone then matures around 30 months in large Slavonian oak, while Recioto spends roughly six.
The result is a range that speaks clearly of Valpolicella Classica: fresh, structured Valpolicella; layered, longโaged Amarone; and lusciously balanced Recioto, all crafted by a family whose hands have tended these valleys for three generations.
