Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Ravazzòl” by Ca’ la Bionda

Ca’ la Bionda has been part of Valpolicella’s winemaking history since 1902, with four generations of the Castellani family focusing on wines that bring out the character of their land. Located in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone, in Marano di Valpolicella, the estate spans 29 hectares of hillside vineyards at elevations between 150 and 300 meters, benefiting from an east-southeast exposure. The winery has followed organic farming principles since 2000 and earned organic certification in 2016, ensuring a natural approach to viticulture and a strong focus on sustainability.

The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Ravazzòl” 2013 is made from a blend of Corvina (70%), Corvinone (20%), and Rondinella and Molinara (10%), harvested from the historic Ravazzol vineyard. With vines between 50 and 70 years old, yields remain low—around 50-60 quintals per hectare—allowing for greater concentration of flavors. The limestone-clay soil, rich in stones, contributes to the wine’s depth and aging potential.

The grapes are harvested from late September through October, ensuring optimal ripeness while retaining acidity. Fermentation takes place in a 5000-liter oak cask with natural yeasts, followed by an extended skin maceration of about 60 days. The wine then ages for eight years in 2000- or 3000-liter oak barrels, developing complexity while maintaining balance and refinement.

This Amarone offers layers of ripe dark fruit, spice, and cocoa, leading to a long and well-structured finish. It pairs well with roasted red meats, game, aged cheeses, and dishes featuring porcini mushrooms or black and white truffles. Built to mature beautifully over time, it represents the expertise of a winery dedicated to tradition, sustainability, and a deep respect for its land.

About Ca' La Bionda

Cà la Bionda is a historic wine estate in Marano di Valpolicella, founded in 1902 by Pietro Castellani. It remains a family-run operation, now guided by fourth-generation brothers Alessandro (winemaker) and Nicola (vine specialist).

The property spans 29 hectares of hillside vineyards at altitudes between 150 and 300 meters, planted exclusively with native grapes such as Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara.

Traditional production methods play a key role here, resulting in distinctive labels that include:

  • Valpolicella Classico
  • Valpolicella Classico Superiore “Casalvegri”
  • Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore “Malavoglia”
  • Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
  • Amarone della Valpolicella Classico “Ravazzol”
  • Recioto della Valpolicella Classico “Le Tordare”

Since 2016, the winery has held official organic certification, refraining from synthetic chemicals and using techniques such as sexual confusion to protect the vines. Sheep graze between the rows, keeping weeds in check and enriching the soil naturally.

This thoughtful approach helps preserve the delicate balance of the land, resulting in wines that convey a clear sense of their origin in Valpolicella.
