Six producers, six vintages, one question: what does time do to Amarone?
This box brings together six bottles from six different producers, spanning vintages from 1997 to 2009. Each wine is already mature, and each one sits at a different point on the curve of development. Tasted side by side, or opened one at a time over months, they offer a clear picture of how Amarone changes as it ages.
The differences are real and traceable. The 2009 Riserva still carries the structure and density of relative youth. Move back to 2001 or 2000 and the tannins have softened, the fruit has shifted from fresh to dried and layered, the finish lengthened. The 1997 represents Amarone at a stage few drinkers encounter: the fruit long integrated, the wine composed and deep. No two bottles here tell the same story.
All six come from the Valpolicella Classico zone or its immediate surrounds. All six follow the appassimento method. The variation you taste is not a matter of style differences between producers alone, but of time itself working on the wine.
Box contents
Tommasi, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Ca’ Florian”, 2003
Grown on a single vineyard belonging to Tommasi for over a century, this Riserva is built from old vines on morainic calcareous and red clay soils. Appassimento lasts over three months on traditional bamboo racks, followed by fermentation with native yeasts and ageing first in French oak then in large Slavonian botti. At 15.5% alcohol, it is a deep, structured wine of clear quality.
Villa Rinaldi, Amarone della Valpolicella DOC “Corpus”, 2000
Drawn from five traditional vineyards in Valpolicella and aged in French barriques, this wine reaches 16% alcohol. The nose is intense and austere, with cherry, plum conserve, cocoa and tobacco, and the structure on the palate is firm and substantial.
Valentina Cubi, Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico “Morar”, 1997
The oldest wine in the box, made from Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grown at between 290 and 350 metres in Fumane and San Pietro in Cariano, with the moderating influence of Lake Garda breezes. Hand-selected grapes and a carefully managed drying process underpin a wine of distinct character from a vineyard with a strong sense of place.
Nicolis, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Ambrosan”, 2009
From the Ambrosan vineyard in San Pietro in Cariano, this Riserva has great body alongside elegance and vigour. Grapes are manually harvested and carefully selected before drying in airy, dry conditions. The youngest wine in the box, it shows what the appellation looks like before the decades of bottle age that have shaped its companions.
Secondo Marco, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Fumetto”, 2008
Made from 55% Corvina, 35% Corvinone and 10% Rondinella, this Riserva undergoes prolonged maceration, seven years in large Slavonian oak barrels, and a further three years in bottle before release. The result is a wine built for the long term, with the structure to match its extended ageing.
Bertani, Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico, 2001
Bertani’s approach favours balance and long ageing over immediate power. The 2001 shows deep garnet colour, with ripe cherry, dried fruit, liquorice, spice and tobacco on the nose, and a palate where freshness and tannin support the fruit. Vanilla tones from extended ageing and a long, persistent finish round out a wine built on elegance rather than force.
Why this box?
If you want to understand how Amarone develops over time, this is a practical way to do it. The six bottles run from 1997 through to 2009, each from a different producer and each at a genuinely different stage of maturity. You are not buying six variations on the same theme; you are buying six reference points across the ageing of one of Italy’s most age-worthy wines, all within the same appellation and the same winemaking tradition.
