Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Campo Inferi”
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Campo Inferi” by Brunelli is a bold and rare wine crafted from 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, and 5% Corvinone. Sourced from the steep, rugged vineyards of San Pietro in Cariano at 350 meters altitude, the vines grow on red clay and limestone soil, with an average age of 40 years. This wine is produced only in exceptional vintages using the traditional appassimento method, where the finest grapes are harvested by hand and dried for four months to concentrate their flavors.
The winemaking process is slow and meticulous, beginning with careful grape selection and four months of drying, leading to a weight loss of 40%. After a gentle pressing, fermentation takes place over 40 days in the cold winter months, followed by a 48-month aging period in 18 hl oak barrels. After bottling, the wine rests for another 12 months before release, ensuring its depth and complexity.
This wine showcases a deep ruby color with amber reflections. Its refined bouquet reveals notes of sweet cocoa and roasted coffee, while on the palate, it is warm, rich, and velvety. Flavors of melted chocolate, cherry in spirit, plum, and currant unfold with a full, luxurious body. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a gratifying, harmonious impression with a well-integrated hint of alcohol.
Ideal as a meditation wine, it pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, braised dishes, game, truffle-stuffed guinea fowl, and mature cheeses such as Gruyère. Serve at 18°C, allowing the bottle to breathe for at least two hours.

The Brunelli family has been rooted in San Pietro in Cariano, in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, since the 18th century. This region is positioned between Verona and Lake Garda, where mineral-rich limestone soils, mild breezes, and indigenous grape varieties come together under an ideal south-southwest exposure. The traditional process of appassimento, enhancing sugar and extract concentration, has deep ties to this land.
Today, the winery is guided by Alberto Brunelli and his parents, Luciana and Luigi. Their approach unites expertise with a personal vision for wines that reflect the nature of their makers. Amarone Riserva Campo del Titari, with its unapologetic strength, brings to mind Luigi’s resolute personality, while Amarone Riserva Campo Inferi conveys gentler shades, echoing Luciana’s graceful style.
From an early age, Alberto observed the cycle of the seasons, the aromas of vineyards, and the evolution of grapes into wine. He recognized that every cuvée carries distinct traits, sometimes evoking family members. Valpolicella’s primary varieties, Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Oseleta, thrive here, including revived native grapes. Double Low Pergola and Espalier training methods link modern techniques with generations of knowledge.
The family’s aim is to highlight the character of local grapes through flavours and fragrances that set their wines apart. With an emphasis on nature’s pace, thoughtful practices in the vineyard, and close attention to quality, Brunelli wines offer a genuine taste of Valpolicella’s identity, rooted in passion and tradition.
