Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A warm, early season and beautiful, healthy grapes.
One of the earliest seasons in years, with excellent grapes.
A very wet winter and a warm start brought early budbreak. A hot, very dry spring moved flowering about ten days ahead of the historical average. June and July were rainy, good for the growth of the bunches, and August was hot and dry. Picking started very early, from 5 September, almost without rain and with wide swings between day and night, ideal for ripening.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Monte Lodoletta” 2011 by Romano Dal Forno
The Amarone “Monte Lodoletta” by Romano Dal Forno is a prestigious wine from the Valpolicella region, known for its elegance, complexity, and aromatic depth. Its extended aging process in barriques allows the wine to achieve an expressive balance and extraordinary finesse.
As one of the flagship labels from Romano Dal Forno, the Amarone della Valpolicella “Monte Lodoletta” originates from a 25-hectare estate in the Val d’Illasi. This hillside area, northwest of Verona, is renowned for its suitability for red grape cultivation. The chalky soils and mild climate, influenced by breezes from nearby Lake Garda, create an ideal environment for the indigenous grape varieties: Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara.
Crafted with a blend of these traditional grapes, the Amarone “Monte Lodoletta” involves a meticulous process. Only perfectly ripe and healthy bunches are selected during the harvest. The grapes are then dried for about four months to concentrate their aromas and sugars. The wine matures for at least 60 months in barriques before bottling. It presents a dark ruby-red color. On the nose, it offers an elegant bouquet with aromas of ripe red fruit, cherry, plum, licorice root, soft spices, bitter cocoa, and chocolate notes. The taste is broad, warm, and enveloping, with dense, persistent flavors and polished tannins. The finish is long and harmonious, making Romano Dal Forno’s Amarone a shining star in the Valpolicella region.
Color: Deep ruby-red
Aroma: Intense licorice and cocoa blending with mature fruity notes of plums and cherries

Romano Dal Forno Winery represents a dynamic meeting point between time-honored winemaking methods and modern technological advances in Valpolicella. The winery builds on an ancient tradition of using semi-dried grapes, a practice that has defined the regionโs style for centuries, while incorporating innovative techniques that ensure each vintage is both robust and balanced. Romano Dal Forno began his career within his familyโs vineyard before choosing to produce wine directly from his own estate in the Illasi hills, where a climate influenced by Lake Garda and predominantly calcareous soils creates optimal conditions for the indigenous red grape varieties.
A significant turning point in his early career was his encounter with Giuseppe Quintarelli, a pivotal figure in Valpolicella winemaking. Under Quintarelliโs guidance, Dal Forno adopted advanced methods in yield management and grape selection. This relationship provided him with valuable insights into both traditional practices and the benefits of adopting new techniques, which he then applied to his own production. The interplay between Quintarelliโs conventional approach and Dal Fornoโs readiness to incorporate innovative processes has helped form a distinctive style of Amarone that continues to set high standards in the region.
At the winery, a strict selection process is employed to ensure that only the best grapes, subjected to a dual sorting procedure before and after the drying phase, are used in the vinification process. In addition, Dal Fornoโs use of smaller oak barrels allows for a faster and more controlled aging process compared to traditional large wooden barrels. This method not only refines the structure of the wine but also preserves the concentrated flavor derived from the grapes.
Over the years, the winery has embraced advancements such as improved air circulation during grape drying and precise temperature controls during fermentation. These technological improvements work in harmony with age-old techniques to ensure each wine maintains a consistent profile, rich fruit flavors, balanced tannins, and subtle spice notes that clearly express the character of Valpolicella.
Romano Dal Fornoโs innovative approach has had a lasting impact on the Amarone scene, influencing many producers in the region to reconsider established methods. Today, his winery stands as a model of how historical practices and modern technology can work together to produce wines that are both robust and refined, consistently representing the unique character of Valpolicella while pushing the limits of what Amarone can become.
