Vintage 2006
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A good year. Fine weather at harvest and plenty of healthy grapes.
An exceptional year, in the Consorzio's words, one to be remembered for a long time.
Normal rain in May and June was followed by a dry July, and young vines on shallow soils felt the drought. The first twenty days of August were often rainy. A cold snap at flowering on 2 and 3 June did no harm, and cloudy weather as the bunches grew gave longer, looser clusters, ideal for drying. Picking started on 25 September in fine weather, with excellent grape health, and a large quantity went to dry for Amarone and Recioto.
Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Cent’Anni DOCG 2006 – Trabucchi d’Illasi
The 2006 vintage of Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Cent’Anni from Trabucchi d’Illasi presents a profound expression of Valpolicella’s potential. This wine is produced exclusively in exceptional vintages, utilizing a blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Croatina, and Oseleta grapes. These grapes undergo an extended drying period, followed by prolonged aging in both barriques and bottles, resulting in a wine of remarkable depth and complexity.
Tasting Profile
In the glass, it exhibits a deep, impenetrable ruby hue. The nose reveals layers of plum, cherry liqueur, licorice, and cocoa, complemented by balsamic undertones. On the palate, it is full-bodied and enveloping, with a dense yet supple tannic structure that leads to a long, persistent finish. This wine pairs well with robust dishes such as braised meats and aged cheeses.
Winemaking and Philosophy
With an alcohol content of 15.5% and a production philosophy rooted in organic practices since 1993, this Amarone is both powerful and refined. It is best enjoyed after a decade of cellaring and has the potential to age gracefully for up to 25 years.
The Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Cent’Anni 2006 represents the exceptional quality and precision of this family-owned estate, offering a wine that reflects both the land and the care behind its production.

Established in 1925, this winery spans Valpolicella and Soave lands on Monte Tenda. For Giuseppe Trabucchi, who believes wine should narrate its place of origin in the Illasi Valley, the focus lies on soil, climate, and exposure. The morainic, stony ground provides strong drainage, and foothill breezes support healthy vines and help dry grapes.
Vineyards lie in scattered parcels around the valley and the villa, each area contributing distinct qualities. They use the Guyot system without herbicides and apply organic fertilization each spring. Certified organic since 1993, the facility combines a modern structure with a notable architectural approach across three buildings: one dating to the 19th century, one from the 1990s, and a subterranean extension added in 2003, connected to the historic cellar by a tunnel.
Grapes are dried on racks in well-aired spaces, avoiding mold, then the resulting wines spend time in barriques followed by large casks. Amarone della Valpolicella is a key part of the range, made by prolonging the grape-drying process and guiding a slow fermentation that brings out concentrated flavours. Across the portfolio, expect reds with deep colour and pronounced fruit notes, balanced by a polished profile that reflects the Illasi Valley’s character.
