An exceptional year. A hot, dry summer and an early harvest of very healthy grapes.
A year of extremes: record heat and little rain, with healthy grapes and an early harvest.
The winter was warm, and the following months set twenty year records for maximum temperatures, July above all. April and July were very dry. Flowering came early, in late May and early June, and the heat of July and August did not slow ripening. The hot, dry weather kept downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis away, while careful vineyard work eased the stress on the vines. Harvest from about 10 September.
“Il Conte” Rosso Veronese IGT by Cà dei Conti
“Il Conte” Rosso Veronese IGT 2015 is the result of a strict and personal grape selection carried out directly in the vineyard by Fabio and Renzo Rancan. The fruit comes from Cà Dei Conti, a one hectare property that has always belonged to the Rancan family, located in Tregnago at the foot of Mount Precastio. Positioned between 400 and 450 meters above sea level with full southern exposure, the vineyard grows on limestone marl soils of glacial origin, rich in rocky components and skeletal material.
The planting density is exceptionally high, around 9,000 vines per hectare, trained in Guyot on terraces. Each vine produces only about one kilogram of grapes, ensuring maximum concentration. The blend combines traditional indigenous varieties such as Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Marzemino and Teroldego with disease resistant grapes including Regent, Cabernet Volos and Cabernet Eidos. These resistant varieties do not require phytosanitary treatments against powdery or downy mildew, reflecting a clear commitment to environmentally responsible viticulture and protection of biodiversity.
Harvest takes place at the end of October in 5 kilogram crates, with several manual selection passes in the vineyard. The grapes are then dried until March in lofts under carefully controlled conditions of temperature, humidity and ventilation. Crushing begins in March, followed by one month of maceration at 8 °C and fermentation at 20 to 23 °C with gentle and continuous movement of the skins. Fermentation lasts around two months. After pressing, the wine is racked, clarified from coarse lees and transferred to French and American barriques where it completes alcoholic and malolactic fermentation and matures for four years on its fine lees. A further year of bottle ageing completes the process.
The analytical profile confirms its depth and power: 18 percent alcohol, total acidity of 7.5 g per liter, residual sugars of 6 g per liter, extract of 55 g per liter and pH 3.8.
In the glass it shows a deep red color, almost black, with a warm and intense bouquet. Aromas of cherry and strawberry blend with dried fruit, licorice, cocoa and layered spice. On the palate it is structured, rich and harmonious, offering remarkable body and long persistence. The balance between concentration, freshness and tannic depth gives a sense of fullness and complexity that unfolds gradually.
Ideal pairings include grilled red meats, roast beef, sliced beef or foal, roasts with savory sauces, game dishes and aged hard cheeses with a slight spicy note. It also performs beautifully as a meditation wine or at the end of a meal.

Ca' dei Conti Winery – Valpolicella with Character
In the rolling hills of Tregnago, within the Val d’Illasi, the Ca' dei Conti winery carries forward a tradition rooted in respect for the land and the craftsmanship of winemaking. Established in 2006 by siblings Renzo and Loredana Rancan, the estate revives a long-standing legacy of viticulture with a focus on quality, sustainability, and authentic expression of the territory.
The vineyards are planted with both traditional and lesser-known native varieties, including Croatina and Oseleta, carefully cultivated to yield small but highly concentrated harvests. A strong commitment to organic and sustainable farming defines every stage of production, from vineyard management to winemaking techniques that highlight the character of the grapes while minimizing intervention.
A Focus on Sustainability and Craftsmanship
Ca' dei Conti follows a philosophy of precision and balance, ensuring that each wine reflects the nuances of its terroir. The estate practices dense vine planting, 9,000 vines per hectare, with low-yielding plants to enhance fruit quality. Grapes are hand-harvested and selected with care, followed by extended drying periods for wines requiring additional depth and complexity.
The winery is part of FIVI (Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers) and has earned recognition from Slow Wine for its dedication to sustainable viticulture. One of its standout wines, "TANO" Organic Amarone DOCG, embodies this approach, made from certified organic grapes that thrive in the mineral-rich limestone and marl soils of the estate.
The Role of Resistant Varieties (PIWI) in Sustainable Viticulture
Innovation plays a key role in the winery’s commitment to environmental responsibility. By cultivating resistant grape varieties (PIWI), Ca' dei Conti reduces the need for chemical treatments while maintaining high-quality production. These varieties, developed through centuries of careful crossbreeding, allow for minimal intervention, preserving biodiversity and ensuring the long-term health of the vineyards.
A Taste of Valpolicella
The Valpolicella DOC region extends beyond its well-known valleys, encompassing unique microclimates that influence the winery’s production. The estate’s high-altitude vineyards benefit from full southern exposure, allowing for excellent ripening conditions while maintaining freshness in the wines. The result is a collection of wines with refined structure, balanced acidity, and layers of complexity that showcase the potential of Valpolicella’s terroir.
At Ca’ dei Conti, every bottle tells the story of careful craftsmanship, sustainable choices, and the deep connection between the land and the people who cultivate it.
