Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Opere San Pietro” by Villa Girardi

The Amarone Classico “Opere San Pietro” from Villa Girardi is an elegant expression of the winery’s dedication to tradition and quality. Produced from the finest grapes of the “Opere San Pietro” vineyard, this wine reflects the unique terroir of Valpolicella Classica, where the Tommasi family, since 1986, has cultivated their vineyards on the limestone-rich soils of the region. Villa Girardi, a historic Venetian villa designed in the 1700s, serves as the heart of the estate, surrounded by 30 hectares of vines, just northwest of Verona.

Tasting Notes: The 2015 vintage reveals a rich and complex profile. In the glass, it presents an intense ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose offers layers of cocoa, dark chocolate, raisins, ripe plum, and black cherry. On the palate, the wine is refined and harmonious, with dominant notes of raisins and plum, complemented by subtle hints of vanilla. The flavor profile is evolved and persistent, making this Amarone a beautifully balanced and sophisticated wine.

Grapes: This Amarone is crafted from 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella, and 5% Corvinone, all from the Opere San Pietro vineyard.

Vinification and Aging: Following the traditional “appassimento” drying process, the grapes undergo pressing and a slow, controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks for about a month. The wine then ages for at least two and a half years in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by an additional six months in smaller tonneaux, allowing the wine to develop its full complexity.

Alcohol: 15% by volume.

Serving Temperature: Serve at 18-20°C.

Food Pairing: This Amarone is perfect for special occasions and pairs exceptionally well with game dishes, red meats, and aged cheeses. Its richness and depth make it an ideal choice for savoring alongside a meal or enjoying in moments of quiet contemplation.

About Villa Girardi

Villa Girardi was founded in 1986 by Franco Tommasi and lies between San Pietro in Cariano and Fumane in Valpolicella, northwest of Verona. This historic 18th-century Venetian villa, designed by Luigi Trezza, is surrounded by thirty hectares of limestone-rich land ideal for growing Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, and Molinara.

A hallmark of Valpolicella is the traditional appassimento procedure, which plays a key role in producing Amarone and other full-bodied wines. Select grape clusters are arranged on racks in airy lofts for several months, gradually losing water content while concentrating natural sugars and aromas. This controlled drying phase results in intense color, flavor, and character.

Once the grapes have reached the desired stage, they move to the Bottaia, the winery’s prized cellar. Here, wines rest in carefully managed conditions to stabilize and develop further complexity before bottling. Modern equipment works in concert with time-honored practices, ensuring consistent fermentation and maturation. Villa Girardi maintains a balance between respect for centuries-old methods and the adoption of thoughtful innovations, underscoring the winery’s focus on quality in every bottle.
