Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cool summer, then a warm, breezy September that ripened the grapes well.
A cool, damp summer, then a warm, breezy September that finished the ripening well.
The winter was warm and dry; cold and rain returned from early April to mid May. July and August were cooler than average with frequent rain, and one hailstorm hit a small area high in the hills. Downy mildew was a challenge, above all around 10 June after four days of rain. September turned fine, with warmth and good ventilation keeping humidity low, and picking for the drying grapes began at the usual time. Fruit set was abundant in every variety.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Prometeo” by Cà Botta
“Prometeo” Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG by Ca’ Botta is a powerful, dry red wine made from Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Corvinone, with all grapes dried through the traditional appassimento method.
The grapes are hand picked from high altitude vineyards between 380 and 520 meters above sea level, a position that helps bring freshness, structure and a clear mineral character to the wine.
Prometeo is produced without added sulfites and fermented in Ca’Botta’s patented Fermentino Ca’ Botta tank, designed to obtain extra extraction and a more powerful body from the dried grapes.
In the glass, it shows an intense ruby red color, almost black. The nose is rich and complex, with notes of spices, black pepper, cocoa, licorice, red berries, cherry, plum and chocolate.
On the palate, it is full and generous, with ripe cherry, blackberry and spice, especially black pepper. The texture is soft and elegant, yet supported by powerful tannins and balanced acidity. Despite its strength and 17% alcohol, the wine keeps freshness and drinkability, leaving a long and intense finish.
This is a bold and structured Amarone, ideal for those looking for depth, richness and a modern interpretation of Valpolicella power.
Why it matters
100% dried grapes, no added sulfites, French barrique aging and fermentation in the Fermentino Ca’ Botta tank make Prometeo one of Ca’Botta’s most distinctive Amarone wines.

Tenute Ca'Botta is a family run winery in Valpolicella, Veneto, that has built its reputation on a single, clear idea: dry wines made from dried grapes, where strength of character and elegance go hand in hand. The estate's vineyards sit high above the valley floor, between 380 and 520 metres above sea level, on south west facing terraces swept by steady winds.
At this altitude the grapes ripen slowly, keeping good acidity, thicker skins and a higher concentration of tannins and antioxidants, while the wind itself helps to dry the bunches still on the vine and allows for a later harvest with riper, more saturated fruit.
The first vintage qualified for traditional Amarone della Valpolicella was the 2009, but the real turning point came in 2013, when the family bottled the first wines made with their own invention, the Fermentino Ca'Botta, a maceration and fermentation tank patented in 2014. The Fermentino keeps the cap of skins permanently submerged in the must, drawing out a deeper extraction of colour, tannins and aromatic compounds without any aggressive pumping over. It's the technical signature behind the estate's Signature line, full bodied red wines of 14.5% and above, dense, structured and built around the appassimento method, the slow natural drying of the grapes after harvest.
Alongside the Signature wines, Ca'Botta produces a range of traditional Valpolicella reds from the classic blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, a small selection of Concept wines born from the question "what if?" (such as Il Priore Rosso Veronese IGT and La Callaia Bianco Veronese IGT), and a few sparkling wines made with the Charmat method for everyday Italian aperitifs.
One detail tells you a lot about the house style: every Ca'Botta wine rests in bottle for at least six months at a controlled temperature before leaving the cellar. Only mature, settled wines are released for sale. The mission, in the family's own words, is simple: to offer full bodied wines where the alcohol never gets in the way of the pleasure of drinking.
