Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Riserva “Pian di Mezzo” 2016 by Cà Botta

Tenute Ca’Botta farms its vineyards in the upper Valpantena valley, on terraced hillsides that climb between 380 and 520 metres above sea level, where cooler nights and good ventilation give the grapes a slow, even ripening.

Pian di Mezzo is the top Amarone of the estate, a Riserva produced in limited quantities only in the best vintages, made from hand picked Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Corvinone fully dried with the appassimento method for several months. Fermentation takes place in the Fermentino Ca’Botta, a tank patented by the family that keeps the cap permanently submerged in the must, drawing out extra colour, structure and aromatic depth without aggressive extraction. The wine then matures at length in 225 litre French oak barriques before a final rest in bottle.

The 2016 pours an almost black ruby with light brick reflections, and opens on dark chocolate, blackberry and black cherry, with sweet spices, green pepper, leather, smoke and toasted nuts adding layers as the glass warms. The palate is dense and tightly woven, powerful but never heavy, closing on a long almond and black cherry finish.

A wine to pour slowly with aged hard cheeses, braised meats and game, or simply on its own at the end of an evening, in the company of good conversation.

About Cà Botta

Tenute Ca'Botta is a family run winery in Valpolicella, Veneto, that has built its reputation on a single, clear idea: dry wines made from dried grapes, where strength of character and elegance go hand in hand. The estate's vineyards sit high above the valley floor, between 380 and 520 metres above sea level, on south west facing terraces swept by steady winds.

At this altitude the grapes ripen slowly, keeping good acidity, thicker skins and a higher concentration of tannins and antioxidants, while the wind itself helps to dry the bunches still on the vine and allows for a later harvest with riper, more saturated fruit.

The first vintage qualified for traditional Amarone della Valpolicella was the 2009, but the real turning point came in 2013, when the family bottled the first wines made with their own invention, the Fermentino Ca'Botta, a maceration and fermentation tank patented in 2014. The Fermentino keeps the cap of skins permanently submerged in the must, drawing out a deeper extraction of colour, tannins and aromatic compounds without any aggressive pumping over. It's the technical signature behind the estate's Signature line, full bodied red wines of 14.5% and above, dense, structured and built around the appassimento method, the slow natural drying of the grapes after harvest.

Alongside the Signature wines, Ca'Botta produces a range of traditional Valpolicella reds from the classic blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, a small selection of Concept wines born from the question "what if?" (such as Il Priore Rosso Veronese IGT and La Callaia Bianco Veronese IGT), and a few sparkling wines made with the Charmat method for everyday Italian aperitifs.

One detail tells you a lot about the house style: every Ca'Botta wine rests in bottle for at least six months at a controlled temperature before leaving the cellar. Only mature, settled wines are released for sale. The mission, in the family's own words, is simple: to offer full bodied wines where the alcohol never gets in the way of the pleasure of drinking.
